I am interested in your response- Is there a sign there or not? Unless it was constructed in the last 6 months or so I don't recall one.

Google maps does not show a national forest sign at the entrance nor down to the stage coach shop- that is where I stopped.

there was a sign there when I went. If I recall, it was right when you make the turn onto the Rt. 112 (and on the left side of the road). there was also an old bridge and to the right side of the road was the Twin River Campground and cottages.

After going to the Twin River Campground and Cottages website it says right on the front page, "Give us a call and come visit us in the white mountains of new hampshire."

I guess someone should call them out on misleading the public, since they aren't officially in the white mountains (yet).

i'm through web sleuths forum #4 dedicated to maura. only five more to go!

a couple new thoughts. i read in an early news article that a witness named susan chamby recalled passing the accident scene the night of maura's disappearance while emergency responders were on the scene. she recalled seeing one of the car's doors open, but i also recall that law enforcement (scarinza, i believe) said in a different news article that the car was locked and law enforcement didn't gain access until the following morning after obtaining a search warrant. interesting discrepancy in and of itself, but it also made me wonder if one – or some – of the initial responders, perhaps thinking they were dealing with a "typical" dui that had left the scene of an accident, might have helped themselves to the unopened bottles of liquor in maura's car.

i have no intention of impugning the reputation of the responders on the scene by any means. i have heard random stories in the past of emergency responders and even police officers that would take things of value in certain situations. with as many responders on the scene the night of maura's disappearance, it may not have been possible, but i'm just sort of musing about the possibility of it as an explanation for the missing bottles of liquor. maybe maura didn't take them with her at all, but they were spirited away from the scene when it was thought it was a normal dui and before it was known it was a missing person.

it was in the course of thread number four, on or about april 19, that the white rag in the tailpipe sort of exploded into the public discourse on the case. in thinking about the white rag, what if someone – or a couple of someones – observed maura intoxicated when she stopped for gas? but instead of a sinister motive, what if maura had gone inside to pay or use the bathroom and these individuals managed to stuff the white rag or towel in the tailpipe in an effort to stall her car and keep her from driving away in the hopes that it would prevent her from hurting herself or others because she was too impaired to drive? so she doesn't notice the rag, gets in the car, drives off and the someones think "oh well, we tried [to disable her vehicle] but it didn't work"? then, the rag is left there, never noticed by Maura as she hurriedly makes her departure from the car?

i realize this rag scenario is probably a greater stretch than some of my other thoughts. so much so that i almost deleted it entirely. but i decided to keep it here just in an effort to keep all ideas, no matter how implausible, on the table for discussion. so, while even i think this is somewhat improbable, i'm still throwing it out there to be chewed on.

yes- the bridge is there and campground is on the right and cottages on left. I actually pan gold right in that area- just don't ever remember ever seeing any forest sign anywhere around there= No big deal really. Just, if facts don't get straight then all you have is grey area and the same stuff keeps coming up.

you said: "When maura made the decision to turn onto Rt. 112, she immedeiately would've been met by a sign welcoming people into the white mountains national forest.
I would think she would realize (if she was indeed going the wrong way) pretty quickly."

I say there is no sign there- that's all- no indication to turn back that she was in the forest.
It is all mute because i think what we do agree on is that she was going where she was intending to go and it wasn't Burlington VT. What made her change her mind from Burlington is interesting. Spur of the moment decision without any reservations in place? possibly.

They are in the so called white mountain area but not in the designated white mountain national forest if you get what I am saying. The white mountains surround but only certain territory is under control of the government ( national).

whatif - all good thoughts, especially about the first responders. I have relatives in that line of work and with the frat-boy attitude many have it would not surprise me if items wandered off as long as they were not considered important.

If people did know where she went I am surprised no one has come forward to make a few bucks selling an unknown angle to the media.

Big secrets can be kept, but it seems like the people involved would eventually give something up.

agreed. especially with it being a smaller, rural community, someone would have likely come forward or said something or fessed up to taking it once the incident went from suspected dui to a missing person.

A couple of additional points: Maura had been given some pre-paid calling cards for Christmas by Billy's family. One or more of them may have been a Red Cross card, maybe someone else will remember more exactly on that. Also, it was reported that Billy had been having cellphone problems such that, when someone called, they could not tell when his voicemail started and wouldn't have known that they were actually being recorded by his voicemail; therefore, if the caller in fact was Maura, then the reason she didn't speak may have been because she didn't realize she had in fact reached his voice mail.
Subsequently, LE claimed to have learned that the call made to Billy's cellphone was in fact from the Red Cross. However, if I am remembering right, a pre-paid card was in fact used to make that call. Helena or someone made the number available on the first or second MM forum that Helena was running, and several posters tried calling it and the number only led to some type of calling card dispatch center or something ... in other words, no person answered when the number was called and the call was kind of "dead-ended". It had initially been hoped that the number that was recorded on Billy's phone in relation to the call and message he received, was a phone number that Maura was calling from and that it could be traced to a location, but apparently the number that was recorded was only a number for the calling card dispatch service and gave no clue as to where the phone was that the card had been used to make the call.
If in fact I'm remembering the above properly, then LE's conclusion that the Red Cross had been trying to reach Billy seems a little curious, because why would the Red Cross need to use a calling card to call him?
Not trying to open a can of worms here, and I'm not sure any nailed down facts can be discerned or any conclusions reached, but it's an interesting thing to have happened.
Didnīt Dawn always claimed a calling card could be traced to a user location?

Re tracing a prepaid calling card... It can be done. The issuing company will have data for all calls routed trough their system. They will ikely only give the info up if presented with a warrant. But donīt tell me it canīt be done, cause it can. Surely LE did this a long time ago. Maybe this is the evidence of her being at an undisclosed location after the accident?

FBI was said to have interviewed family and friends so no big secrets I am sure that they aren't aware of anyway.
