WTH-the-original wrote: <quoted text> I'll try to help you again with this. This is what we know: She called her friends/professors and lied about a death in the family so she could secret herself away from school for days (at least) while driving hundreds of miles away from where she was supposed to be and not telling boyfriend/family? By definition that is running away. Bill Actually she didn't tell her friends there was a death in the family, she didn't tell her friends anything. She emailed her professors and told them there was a death in the family. That is what you do when you're in a tough major and you want an excused absence, that's not all that uncommon actually. So no, I would not call that 'running away' at all, I would call that wanting a few days off from school. Most NORMAL people would not classify that as running away, in fact that's rather silly to say. If she was running away or had plans to commit suicide why email her professors at all?? She was out of there, why get herself an excused absence? If this girl was sooo distraught that she was on the verge of suicide, or even running away & starting a new life I don't see her talking the time to make sure that her absences would be excused? Those two things don't add up. Remember that she was going to umass, a school with 30,000 other students. Nobody would be looking for her because she missed a few days if classes. She wasn't in high school where they'll call your parents if you miss a few days. If her plan was running away or heading up NH to commit suicide then sending that email to professors makes no sense at all. If she was leaving school forever, never to return, then that email makes no sense at all really. No teachers or anyone else like that would be lookin for her, that is a fact. She would've known that, anyone who's ever gone to college should know that. IMO that email to professors shows a direct intent to return to school, I don't see how else it can be interpreted. So to say that she was 'running away' is clearly an assumption; one that is not based on the few known facts of the case. If you look at all her actions, the email, what she brought with her on the trip, etc, it looks pretty obvious that she was planning on getting away for a few days and then returning to school. Saying she was runnin away is a rarer silly assumption and clearly not based on any facts.

Bob - I had the same thoughts after i read Bills post. She emailed her prof so actually she was seeking permission to leave and that goes against the runaway definition. There is a diff in running away and getting away. I believe Maura was getting away with intentions of coming back.

Maura was biding time - I bet someone Maura knows (friend) knew of her plans but isn't talkin. Just a gut feeling.

Why Email the prof if you are going to miss a day or two? they will just mark you absent and no red flags there if her intentions were to just go commit suicide.
yea the second accident may have changed things but if she had suicide thoughts right at that point of the accident then I would think that she wouldn't run much from the crash site to pull it off.
If that is what did happen then I would think that she would be close to the crash site. i am not an expert in this at all but i do know three in my circles that committed suicide. Very sad and I just don't get it at all.

Change of thought -Why Email your Prof if you are going to commit suicide in NH - You could take several days off and just be marked a no show before they started investigating it. IDK- Does anyone think Maura was crying for help and wanted to be found or stopped but nobody could reach her and visa versa cause of no cell signal. her I love you dude to Billy- The note the email to professors? I guess I just see all sides as what could have happened.

JWB wrote: I am just going to throw a thought out there- bash me if you will or enter into a conversation. My opinion/ Thought is If Maura did Indeed start walking east she would have quickly realized that the area is very vacant of civilization and lighting. I realize that the moon was bright that night but just the same the area can be creepy even while driving in a car. The road is very narrow and most of the camps are seasonal and are not vacant in the Winter. I really just can't imagine a young female going very far on that stretch of road without freeking out. The terrain to the right side of the road slopes up and there have been wash outs on that side of the road. A very difficult venture if she wanted to wander into the woods. If Maura decided to cross over the left of the road then you have the river and then dense woods. I can see someone just wanting to get off that dark scarey road and hang for a bit. If Maura did cross the frozen river then that is a very baron area of thickly wooded area that I don't believe anyone really ventures to. I know there are some roads on the other side of the river but I have never traveled on them, I want to say they are accessible as you go over the covered bridge but that is just a guess. Any other local or person that knows the other side of the river have any thoughts about the road system or traffic over there if any? If the road area was creepy&scary I question why she would cross a river into darkened woods,IMHO that would be a scarier area.

Well I obviously can't speak for her but if she was evading police and realized that going forward was just to creepy or whatever you want to call it the the only option would be to high tail it and run real fast or find a safe place to hang and drink the Kahlua. Just my process of thinking that area out is all.

Other option is to go up BHR. That is a long dark road also. I just don't feel she ventured far on her own that night. I lean towards abducted or meeting up with someone but stronger towards abducted because of the accident at WB curve. I believe the accident was not anticipated and no other vehicles besides the red truck were mentioned. If I could interview some one I would want to interview the wife of SBD. I don't believe SBD did anything wrong but he might have seen someone or something that intimidated him. Just my feeling on it.

I agree 1000% that SBD may have seen something&was scared enough of who he saw not to tell..If he saw a stranger do something he would have spoken up..did ANY of the local homeowners see the LE car nose to nose with Mauras car?

findmaura wrote: <quoted text> Was the river Def. frozen&crossable? You know- I am not a winter person to much so I really don't venture much but an occasional cross country ski run. The river is really dry late summer and would imagine winter as well. In the spring when the snow starts to run down the mountains into the river it begins to break up the ice and can be crazy - such as Renner videos. Feb 9 no way!!! way to early for ice dams and that sort of thing. I do think it is very possible (sorry jenks) but probable ? IDK why go through all that distance in sneakers to sit and rest to drink . I just don't see that playing out really at all- I f she was a real heavy drinker she would have set up camp real soon and started to go at it and she would have been found. I am willing to look at that view but i find it very unlikely when you put all info together along with possibilities. JMO FYI- Good to talk about Maura again. I sure hope it is solved soon.
