I have posted this before, but it might be worth mentioning again. This is from a March 3, 2004 article in the Patriot Ledger. From my interpretation of this news article, it looks like LE wasn't able to investigate the red truck at that time based on RO's sighting since she didn't get a plate number. Hopefully they have since investigated it and/or Renner will pass his info along to CCU if it is the same red truck:
"Sgt. Beausoleil said another tip, from a woman who was walking on Route 112 in Bath, N.H., on Feb. 9, also could not help investigators develop a criminal case.
The woman reported a suspicious man in a red pickup truck with Massachusetts plates eyeing her near the Stage Stop general store in Bath at about 7 that night.
According to the woman, the man left when she went into the store and headed east toward the accident scene. Ten minutes later, the woman saw Haverhill police go by in the same direction, responding to the accident.
‘‘She didn't have a license plate number, so that doesn't give us anything,'' Beausoleil said.‘‘We don't feel confident it's connected.''

Sorry Citigirl but I can't find a link to it anymore. I had copied and pasted the text of the article into a Word document last year. The title of the article was "Leads fruitless, police stalled in Murray probe" if that helps you find it. It looks like many of the older articles are no longer online though.

the short answer is I was trying to separate fact from fiction, because this case has a lot more fiction than it does fact.

I have no illusions about solving this case.

But had I gotten some momentum going with the interviews (earned some people's trust and showcased an abilty to provide something of substance and not something that belongs in a fiction book) I believe it would've opened some doors as far as getting interviews with actual family members.

I was always honest and upfront with the people I Interviewed. I let them know that I am a professional journalist of 12 years, but also make sure to point out that I am not working this case in an official capacity, but rather as someone that (in their spare time) wants to tackle the mess that this story has become over the years.

And everyone (All 3) I have interviewed have been very helpful at first.

Then someone gets a hold of them (failed journalist turned successful fiction book writer) and they quit cooperating with me all of a sudden, just randomly.

Here is the whole article:

"March 3, 2004

Leads fruitless, police stalled in Murray probe
JOE McGEE
The Patriot Ledger

Police investigating the disappearance of Hanson native Maura Murray have discovered that the disturbing phone conversation Murray had four days before leaving the University of Massachusetts at Amherst was with her sister.

According to her family, Murray called her sister, Kathleen Murray of Hanover, at about 10 p.m. Feb. 5, four days before she packed her belongings and headed north to New Hampshire.

But what was said should not have upset the 21-year-old, Kathleen Murray said.

‘‘We didn't really talk about much. I had been fighting with my fiancé, and we talked about that, but I don't know why she would be upset about that,'' Kathleen said.

Maura Murray's Saturn sedan crashed on Route 112 near Haverhill in northern New Hampshire at about 7 p.m. Feb. 9, hours after Murray left campus. She was gone when police arrived about 10 minutes later.

There were no footprints in the snow, and search dogs could not pick up her scent.

With the investigation well past the search-and-rescue phase, police are at a standstill trying to determine why Murray, a promising student and athlete, appears to have walked away from her college life.

A number of fresh leads have developed during the past three weeks, but none have proved fruitful, according to New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Bret Beausoleil. Nobody knows if Murray wandered into the woods and perished or if she was kidnapped.

‘‘The more time that goes by, the more concerned you get, but there is nothing we have found to point one way or the other,'' Beausoleil said.

Murray left UMass on the afternoon of Feb. 9. She cleaned out her dorm room as if she were leaving for good; did a MapQuest search for directions to Burlington, Vt.; took $280 in cash out of her bank account; and E-mailed her bosses and professors to say she would be away for personal reasons.

Kathleen Murray said she talked to her sister regularly to chat. Like all of their phone conversations, the one on Feb. 5 was about ‘‘regular stuff,‘just-trying-to-get-thro ugh-the-day' kinds of things,'' she said.

‘‘When I heard she was crying after that, I couldn't understand why, especially because it's not like her to cry,'' she said.

Last week, Kathleen Murray and her brother Fred found a pair of juices's underwear on a roadside in Haverhill. DNA testing had not been completed as of yesterday.

Sgt.

‘‘She didn't have a license plate number, so that doesn't give us anything,'' Beausoleil said.‘‘We don't feel confident it's connected.''"

and for full proper context Citigirl:

This is the actual first ever email I sent james Renner back in July of 2011 before he had made his first blog post.

June 2011

James

I came across your new blog on Maura Murray and I like yourself have always been fascinated and somewhat bugged by ths particular case.

I am glad you are taking it upon yourself to keep the case alive. I am looking forward to reading about what you discover.

I don't have any connections to the case by any means, but I have been following this case for years through the internet and media.

So, while I don't have any viable tips or leads to give you on the case, I would like to make a request if you are still in the information gathering stage.

I am hoping that you take a close look at the events that took place concerning Maura prior to her unannounced trip to the white mountains.

I truly think her work supervisor,(the one that walked her back to the dorms because she was so hysterical that Thursday night) would be a great person to get in contact with. She would have perspective about Maura (Seeing her in an emotional state) that not many do.

I can tell you if you don't already know, that the supervisor is on facebook and her name is Karen Castaldo Mayotte. I have no idea how she would respond if requested for an interview, but I am just amazed that no one (others that have written about maura) have gone to her before.

Also the whole petrit vasi hit and run incident that took place the same night Maura broke down at work. I still after all these years struggle to dismiss any relation between the two. Although Maura would've likely been at work when Vasi was discovered by police. Police nor Vasi have any idea how long he had been laying there in the ground after being hit.

sorry this has been so long. But I would love to see this case resolved once and for all and want to see all angles covered.

Anything I could do to help, just e-mail me back.
Clint Harting

I sent out an interview request to maura's supervisor over a year ago and she just recently had gotten back with me, very much wanting to help out.

So I wasn't trying to show James up, I really believe the supervisor is an important witness and was glad to finally hear from her.

this will be my final maura murray post.

FACT: Maura's offical job title was "Security Monitor"
FACT: Maura worked from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. the night of her meltdown at work.

FACT:Vasi Hit and run was reported a block over from the Melville Dorm Maura worked at - at precisely 12:20 a.m.

Fact:Maura's supervisor was told something was wrong with maura and she went to check on maura somewhere close to 1 a.m.

FACT:When Supervisor entered the dorm maura was working the front desk at and walked right up to maura and asked her what the matter was, maura was non-responsive and staring straight past the supervisor.

FACT:Two females entered the dorm (One a resident, the other a guest of the resident) and Maura did not acknowledge them or request that the guest be signed in and continued staring ahead blankly as allthewhile the supervisor was continuing to ask maura what was wrong and getting no response out of maura

FACT:Finally Maura GESTURED TO HER CELL PHONE and told the supervisor "My Sister" before immediately breaking down and beginning to cry.

FACT:Supervisor got permission to check maura out of work early (30 to 45 minutes before 2 a.m.) YET MAURA REMAINED AT THE DESK FROZEN, as the supervisor finally decided to go and pack up maura's textbooks and cell phone herself and carry maura's backpack for her as she headed for the front door which finally prompted maura to get up and exit the building.

FACT:Supervisor turned over a witness statement to police.

OPINION: Polie read about maura pointing to her phone and saying "MY SISTER" and that is how they determined that a phone call that took place from 10:10 p.m. to 10:38 p.m. between maura and her sister, must be the source of maura's meltdown.

FACT:Maura actually was on her cell phone at 12:07 a.m. that same night and less than an hour before her meltdown.

OPINION:Maura was talking to her boyfriend from 12:07 a.m. to 12:14 a.m.

OBSERVATION:Why has this phone call not been talked about publically, yet we talk about the 10:10 phone call that was hours before maura's meltdown.

One direct quote from Maura's supervisor while I am at it

My question:
And what was your reaction to seeing Maura staring blankly ahead? Was this just a college student day-dreaming or being spaced out, or did you believe right away something was really wrong with Maura?

KM:
"I totally think that something was really wrong with Maura, as she just looked right past me as I walked into the dorm that night and was definitely not a day-dream kind of stare."

Thought: maybe this phone call AND/OR Maura's frozen/non-responsive demeanor were the precursor/s to Maura's email to professors and job about "a death in the family". What I mean is, no matter what the call was about or with whom, her reaction was extreme and that reaction would tend to back up the later "death in the family" statement.

Oh, I left one thing out. Someone may want to look into this some day.

Maura worked from 8 p.m. straight to 2 a.m. which means (she would have had to receive breaks I believe).

Vasi hit and run reported at 12:20 a.m.(means probably happened minutes earlier)

Maura on her cell phone from 12:07 to 12:14 a.m.

Where precisely was maura when she was on her cell phone from 12:07 a.m. to 12:14 a.m?

Was Maura on a brief break?

She had called a coffee place (Rao's Coffee to be precise) earlier in her shift and talked for three minutes (likely ordering something). How did she get it if she was glued to her desk like James would have you believe?

That is all

why do you feel you need to stop posting? because there is disagreement between you and Renner disagree about the interpretation of information collected from the public view for over 10 years? i, for one, would encourage your continued participation and expression of your opinions.

<quoted text> According to him he ignored the red truck sighting and put it down as rumor before investigating it. If he truly wanted to find out what happened to Maura he would have not left any avenue unturned regardless of his thoughts and opinions. Red truck info has been out there for along time. If your writing a book it needs to be the facts and not what you feel. I believe Maura met up with foul play that night and was murdered.
I still don't understand the issue with this. Regardless of what weight Mr. Renner may have assigned to the red truck initially, he has investigated it. Perhaps later than some may have liked but we all have differing views on what is important to this disappearance. Since he has looked deeper into the red truck issue and has details he will be sharing, it seems the complaints about his lack of urgency are about a day late.

Sorry Orko but I don't see anything new here that Renner or news articles haven't already given us.

Also, an employer in mass is required to give a 30 min lunch break after a 6 hour period.

Orko/Clint/Scoops/Peter,

I actually told Karen to talk to you if she wanted.

I believe she decided not to because you were using different names on Facebook and because there seems to be little to verify your experience as a journalist online.

I don't care if other reporters look into the case. The more info, the better. But you have to be honest with your sources.

Also, the coffeeshop has never been verified.

An employer in Mass is not required to give breaks though many do. I would think that Maura prob would have been able to eat and drink at her station. Her job was not an exhausting job nor of long duration that required a breather ( IMO).
