If you want peace and quiet I suggest you move close to but not in a major city. No cell phone coverage, poor to nonexistant tv and radio reception, extremely poor road condition reminding of the Soviet union in the 70ies, and the neighbors sheep ate the landline cable again... but the phone company is planning to do away with it altogether anyway... Your US citizenship would not be a problem as long as you can find an employer who needs your skills. You´re most welcome, but don´t forget to bring a heap of money to pay our skyhigh taxes!
Many thanks! Much appreciated!

Beagle,
As another Swede here I think that Hannah may be a little harsh on Sweden in some ways.
1.Com pared to the convuluted ways of the US Immigration procedures, the Swedish equivalent is extremely quick, simple and straight-forward in practically all aspects.
2.Yes, taxes are high, as they are in all the Scandinavian countries and, more or less so,in the rest of Western Europe.
But for your high taxes you are granted free access to the publicly funded health care system, which in many ways is similar to the publicly funded Canadian health care system.
So, no need for any sky-high health-care insurance premiums which may in some instances still leave you "uncovered", as may sometimes be the case in the US.
3. Yes, Internet/Broadband issues can be a hassle in some very remote locations in the countryside, but certainly no worse and often a good deal better than is often the case in the more desolate parts of Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont, or other similar locations in the US.
4. I believe that you once mentioned here on Topix that your ancestors hailed from the charming city of Helsingborg in the southernmost part of Sweden, with the city of Helsingör in Denmark being visible just across the Strait of Öresund.
Helsingborg with a little over 100000 people is a wonderful city, one of the most beautiful in Sweden and conveniently close to Copenhagen, Denmark.
I´m sure you´d love it there.
5. Practically all Swedes speak at least some basic English and quite a few speak English very well indeed, especially in the bigger and mid-sized cities.
5. As for the rules & regulations concerning Swedish immigration there is a very good overview in English available on the web site of the Swedish Immigration Authority.
I shall be getting back here with the correct web address later today.
Welcome to Sweden!
Many thanks! Much appreciated, especially the link.

Swedish beer is just horrible, but if you like to drink cat pee I guess it´s great. Stay clear of Pripps! If you want really good beer, go to Fiji, their´s is the greatest, not to mention their rum.

Euro, are you on the gov´s pay roll or something? LOL
Completely OT, but - our health care system is breking down and people have to increasingly rely on private health insurance. And you don´t have to live far from the metro areas to get poor infrastructure, I´m only a 40 min drive from Gothenburg, but could just as well be living in Laponia. My mom is just outside Stockholm, but same thing there. But - we have very good animal protection as compared to most other countries, I believe Finland is better though. And I agree Helsingborg is lovely in the summer!

They sure aren´t getting any free advertising from me! Heck, not even our very own suicide bomber could do it right, he was a product of the Swe school system, so I guess he slept his way through bomb class too. So I suppose the nogood public schools for once turned out a blessing!

Hi Hannah,

With respect, the level of quality health care varies widely between the different regions in Sweden. After all, the various regions (Landsting) basically run their own health care systems, so the differences are indeed substantial.

It´s just not possible to apply the same broad brush to the whole country when it comes to a discussion about this particular matter.
It´s just like - on a much, much bigger
scale - making sweeping statements about varous phenomena in, say, the United States without taking into consideration the vast differences between the various states.

As for the level of adequate Internet infrastructure in rural areas, I doubt whether Beagle would be looking for a place to live in the "middle of nowhere". As far as I know, the Internet infrastructure is no better in, say, rural areas of e.g. Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine.

Let´s face it:
No country is perfect. It´s just a matter of finding the best mix of various factors, and that, obviously, is a very individual matter indeed!
Having travelled a fair amount in different countries - and also lived abroad - I think I can safely say that the old adage that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, is a rather apt observation!
As far as I know the Inter

Were you are the individual that solved some of the Doe Network cases? If so, I wanted to say hats off.

If so, anything from that experience you could pass on as to methodology, what you learned, etc. And how that could be applied to other cases, possibly Maura's? Thank You.:)

...because I'm just curious. If someone is either 1) claiming to be "the real me" or 2)insinuating that another poster is "really SB" or 3) all of the above, I suppose that I should be perversely flattered, orsomething. I'm not, however. Do not make the mistake of assuming that my absence from this particular sewer denotes a lack of interest in Maura's case. Quite the contrary. I have recognized that no good can possibly come out of here, that there is little or no interest here in actually finding out what happened to Maura, whatever it may have been.

I don't know what happened to Maura. I have always said that it is possible that she "ran away" for whatever reason or reasons - and if so, that is nobody's business but hers. Don't start any nonsense about "running away is evidence of wrongdoing" because that's frankly bullshit. It is also POSSIBLE - neither inevitable or anything like certain, but POSSIBLE - that she, like MANY people in NH, VT, QC and ME, met with foul play in an act that is unsolved and for which the perpetrator remains at large.

I'd be interested and astounded to enter a rational discussion about this, but I find that spectacularly unlikely in this den of -to put it as delicately as possible - self-stimulation.

Well, hey, approval by "judging" - which is, I guess, nice and all but not why I bothered to show up. My point is that anything here that isn't an actual attempt to find facts is "circular reasoning."

I left because half-wits insisted that I had a scenario in mind and was trying to make Maura's case fit the scenario - nothing could be farther from the truth. There was also the implication, leveled at anyone here who exhibited the slightest sympathy for Maura's family, friends and loved ones that we were only trying to protect Maura's reputation. Again, not true for me. I did not know Maura personally. I think that it is damned mean-spirited at best to blame a young woman for her own disappearance in the most libelous of ways, particularly when there are NO facts to support those accusations.
