One of the things you notice in Keyes' movements are that he is willing to drive thousands of miles in order to (presumably) find his victims. For instance, he flew to Manchester NH in October 2004 and drove a rented car 1,745 miles to do whatever he did on that trip. In 2009, he again rented a car in Manchester NH and drove 1,047 miles roundtrip to rob a bank and kill somebody in Tupper Lake, NY. He also appears to have not had a lot of money worries since he traveled constantly and went to places like Belize and Cancun and apparently had a habit of robbing banks. So I don't think that traveling and spending money for that travel would have stopped him from doing some seemingly irrational things.
So, with that in mind, it actually seems to me now that he very well could have flown to SLC in February 2004 and, possibly wanting an alibi for that trip, rented a car and flown to another airport and then flown to NH again. Considering his behaviors noted above, I really don't think it is too far-fetched. It is the incredible coincidence of the dates involved that makes me consider this scenario. It is more complicated than flying directly to his ultimate destination, more expensive and time-consuming, but if he was still concerned with covering his tracks in early 2004, I still think it is a possibility and I'm just throwing it out there if anybody feels like discussing it.
Keyes put 522 miles on the SLC rental car. I did some checking and found that there are four airports within a 522 mile trip driving radius, or 261 miles one way. Grand Junction Colorado, Boise Idaho and Jackson Wyoming are outside that radius. I also did a flight duration/2013 cost comparison just to see which airports might be more likely. All flights are to Boston, as he flew in to Boston a few times and it would be cheaper and less connections from these towns to Boston rather than Manchester.
Idaho Falls, ID - 214 miles - 7 hours -$528 one-way
Twin Falls, ID - 223 miles - 7 hours -$724 one-way
Pocatello, ID - 173 - 7 hours -$713 one-way
Elko, NV - 227 miles - 8 hours -$649 one-way
Of course, he could have just been visiting SLC, but again, it's the dates of February 6-13 that really have got me going hmmm ...

This is kind of interesting too. Since Keyes put more miles on the rental car than roundtrip to any of the airports I listed, I decided to check to see where he could have picked up those extra miles.
I've been to SLC and up to the Tetons and Yellowstone a few times, and each time I've gone I've taken the scenic trip along I-89 past beautiful Bear Lake to Jackson and points beyond. Lots of people do this, it's a beautiful drive. Thinking Keyes might have had time to do a more leisurely and more scenic route on his return to SLC rather than the boring I-15, I mapped it out on Google maps. I'll put that map in a separate link in case Topix doesn't post it, but here are the basic directions.
From the Enterprise parking lot in SLC to the Idaho Falls airport parking lot, thence taking Route 26 southeast along the Snake River to meet up with I-89 and following that route southwest back to the I-15 and then back to the SLC Enterprise parking lot is:
522 miles.
Just more food for thought.
