Bill, do you know where the nearest AT trailhead to Maura's crash is? I'm planning a thru for 2016 and am thinking it would be nice to take a zero in the area if I make it that far. I know you peak Mt. Moosilauke then head towards Franconia Notch but as far as trailheads I haven't found much information.

Easy. Find a clue of where she had been after she left the car. That provides (assuming no ill intent) an area where she was AFTER the crash. That would redefine the search area and also give at least some "direction of travel" information to use in future searches. OK, not easy because no new clues have been forthcoming. But, when that happens I am sure it will cause the requisite rethinking of what happened, where she went, maybe how she traveled, etc.

Typically you start at the PLS (place last seen) or LKP (last known position). Just like the police did that night, searching for indicators of a direction of travel from the car, and then later the search with the dogs. Maybe they might leap forward to the area of the reported person seen by the CW if they think the sighting is strong enough that it warrants changing the PLS to that spot. Everything I heard about what they did that night and subsequent F&G/NHSP searches sounds like they did what I would expect if it was my child they were looking for. I'd be upset they didn't find them, but they did what I would expect. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if she had just waited at the car like she should have. Again, unfortunately, some people are destined to just be an example of what not to do. Sadder still, since she seemed to have such potential.
