I disagree with your position that state actors are in a better position to search the area than non-state actors.

I agree that only experienced hikers, familiar with the area in question, should volunteer to help James on this.

If in James' position, I would have a thorough screening process for volunteers.

Its a joke at this point. It would have been interesting to have someone go to the cordinates before the annoucement, now at this point anyone could have placed something there as a ruse. If you want my opinion the place is now tainted and anything found there I would be skeptical to accept anything as "new evidence".

Absolutely irresponsible. I agree with you 100%. For the sake of goodness, I can see that drunken fool granny jumping on her moped and riding off in all directions with a bottle of cheap vodka, her eighties itunes and dreams of being a hero echoing around in her head. Remember the backpack and the I didn't have a camera ( except for the one in my phone ) incident?!

I absolutely didn't say that state actors are better at anything. In particular SAR. BUT and this is a big but. What if, there IS a booby trap there? I mean, I use to spend a great deal of my time avoiding booby traps in my service years. It is still on my mind and I have come across several hobo camps that had booby traps set. Not to maim or injure but as early warning devices. I have seen every one of them so far before tripping them. But how many people are use to looking for that as they walk in the woods? What if this idiot thinks it would be great fun to booby trap this area? Hell, I don't believe its renner but could he do this to enhance book sales? Imagine the tons of free publicity it would generate. Person injured/killed from booby trap while looking for Maura. All while renner sits nice and safe in his house collecting royalties? I personally believe that this asshole did nothing more than put a pin in the map and mail off the coordinates to renner. But, one never knows. This hiker started out on Sawyer River Road, which is the first picture, and is near the same elevation as the Lincoln Woods trail Bill mentioned - lots of snow.

What people who don't this don't generally know is that the winter in many ways can be easier in some respects. You can snowshoe or ski in the winter. You can cut trails that can be shorter and less effort in some cases. If you are a good skier, well skiing beats snowshoeing downhill. Also people really underestimate the beating your knees/legs take on the downhills in the summer because of the boulders and scree and other rocks. And then their is the beauty. And quiet. I use to camp a lot more in the winter than I have been recently. I have camped in that area many times in summer and dead of winter. It is a real treat. Its my religion.

As an aside: I vaguely recall booby trap cases from law school. Although it varies from state to state, I would think that if a booby trap capable of causing death actually resulted in death, that would be involuntary manslaughter if not second degree murder.

In any event, if the person who mailed the coordinates did so with the intent to place others in danger, I suggest that he or she come clean now.

Thanks but truthfully, I do it so friends, coworkers, people I know, wont have to trek in there to pulls renners or worse yet, some poor schmuck he sends on this errand fat ass off of the mountain risking rescuers lives in the process.

The only upside is that NH now charges for rescues they deem to be caused by the irresponsibility of the rescued. I.e. not prepared, didn't check weather, not properly clothed, with enough food etc. I can only hope that they could include renner in that lawsuit if they decide that his level of irresponsibility rose to that level and sending the person rescued into the area and was at least partially also responsible. They have charged and recovered thousands of dollars. Most didn't even go to court. They just paid fine.

This is one of the sites where I went looking for recent trip reports to Mt. Carrigain: http://trailsnh.com/maps/index.php... It was the first site to come up on my Google search of "White Mountains trail conditions."

After zooming in on Mt.Carrigain, the column on the left, third entry down, shows Brian's trip report, which I immediately chose because of the most recent date. If you click on the map, it takes you to a forum entry, made by "Brian02108," his screen name on that forum (Boston zip code), with a link to the the link I posted of his trip report.

This was simply research I did, trying to find information that would possibly keep amateur hikers from pursuing this "lead" and getting hurt or lost or worse.

But no, because, as others say, you love to throw turds out there, now you are implying that I am this hiker - sounds like something JWB or Renner would say.

I am starting to understand the animosity shown to you from some of the long-time posters on this forum, which is a shame as I haven't felt that toward you before.
