Why the rear window, on a long highway trip I do that quite a bit to eliminate road noise from the front window. She may also have opened it because she was drinking or tired so the cold air would keep her alert.

I do feel though considering the limited resources in northern NH's small towns especially on a week night and with other calls coming in they likely did all they felt they could and like most cases the driver shows up the next day. I think they may have initiated the search using logic feeling the driver would go toward or stay near civilization and the crash site, or go to the Swiftwater store for a phone.
Problem is when people are trying to be evasive they don't always use a logical line of thinking, fear clouds sound judgement, and IF they have a head injury ANY logic can be thrown out. I am still in the camp of hypothermia considering she wasn't dressed for the weather, Butch Atwood stated she looked cold and shivering, she did have alcohol which lowers your defense against hypothermia, and she exerted herself going miles down the road. Who knows how much sleep she had in the past nights, she is obviously stressed and not thinking clearly, all combined its pretty much the perfect storm for hypothermia.

Having seen many head strikes and air bag deployments. It is not unusual to see the windshield damaged by the airbag. The windshield is actually part of the containment to make the airbag trap the human in conjunction with the seat belt. That impact was not caused by a head strike. There is always hair, blood and sometimes more left behind in that type of strike in my experience and its shape is different.
