Consider the car smoked ( burned oil ) how sound was the exhaust, she could have opened it for fresh air. Why the rear window, on a long highway trip I do that quite a bit to eliminate road noise from the front window. She may also have opened it because she was drinking or tired so the cold air would keep her alert. the question remains though, why such an intelligent young lady would take a vehicle that wasn't running correctly on a trip of this distance. It is said that she wouldn't even drive it to clinicals.....so why drive it to NH?

NHwoodsman52 wrote: <quoted text> I agree to a certain point, yes DUI drivers do disappear after an accident, and seeing the college decal only re-enforced this believe. BUT the spiderweb crack in the windshield on the drivers side should have been a BIG red flag. At that very point a person with a possible head injury should have taken into high consideration. Possible Concussion causing confusion or even amnesia or even a brain bleed. I do feel though considering the limited resources in northern NH's small towns especially on a week night and with other calls coming in they likely did all they felt they could and like most cases the driver shows up the next day. BUT I still do not understand the lack of any real search east bound especially considering the windshield. I think they may have initiated the search using logic feeling the driver would go toward or stay near civilization and the crash site, or go to the Swiftwater store for a phone. Problem is when people are trying to be evasive they don't always use a logical line of thinking, fear clouds sound judgement, and IF they have a head injury ANY logic can be thrown out. I am still in the camp of hypothermia considering she wasn't dressed for the weather, Butch Atwood stated she looked cold and shivering, she did have alcohol which lowers your defense against hypothermia, and she exerted herself going miles down the road. Who knows how much sleep she had in the past nights, she is obviously stressed and not thinking clearly, all combined its pretty much the perfect storm for hypothermia. Just wondering how her head could have hit the windshield hard enough to break it with air bag deployment. Doesn't the air bag prevent that?

Another question that also remains is why such an intelligent young lady would not go to any of the 5 houses in plain view for help but rather head down the road on foot in the darkness. So many questions and so few answers.

I have heard that in some cases a person can torpedo over the airbag not sure if its true, also I have to wonder if the charge in the airbag was full. We don't know the maintenance history of the vehicle, Fred who should have known if the windshield was previously cracked felt Maura's head hit the windshield and the statement was made elsewhere that her head may have contacted the windshield. There have been cases of faulty airbags, the windshield is just another of many Maura mysteries.

Anyone know if Maura was in the habit of wearing it when driving?

Does the police report state that the windshield was broken or could that have happened at the impound lot?

Having seen many head strikes and air bag deployments. It is not unusual to see the windshield damaged by the airbag. The windshield is actually part of the containment to make the airbag trap the human in conjunction with the seat belt. That impact was not caused by a head strike. There is always hair, blood and sometimes more left behind in that type of strike in my experience and its shape is different. Bill

"Impound lot".....Now that is a joke right. Maura's car has never been in an impound lot...NOT A SECURE ONE ANYWAY. Still to this day it is not. Last time I was in the North country I went to Twin Mt Troop F and the car still sits out in the open.

That wouldn't effect and already broken windshield

Nope Don't wear boxers. The car is not behind locked gates. what car are You looking at? The accident report is wrong because of the drawing of the trees and the tire impressions. By Wowzers own words....The car was much further down the street in the road in front of Marrottes house by his small stand of Balsam trees.
