Why this phone call has never discussed goes beyond reason, yet we keep hearing about the 10:10 to 10:38 phone call between maura and her older sister.
If its been determined Maura was on the cell phone from 12:07 A.M to 12:14 A.M,why dont we know the phone number she was calling?I just cant reconcile Maura blurting out "My sister" in the accident scenerio...Did either of Mauras sisters visit and use her car?

If Maura was in such a state as her supervisor described, then I doubt she would have been in any condition to get herself back to the desk. If she hit someone with her car, I would think she would be in that state of shock then and there. Not able to drive herself back, get back to her desk, and then suddenly become zombie-like and unable to sign herself out etc. Although the timing adds up, her reaction/behavior does not, but that is just my opinion.
Amy,these are excellent points you have made!I agree.

It has been determined maura was on the phone from 12:07 to 12:14 to someone who called her from New City, New York.

New City, New York is 22 miles from West Point. And while maura's boyfriend (oklahoma) and sister Julie may no longer have been at west point, their calling plan would still be based in that location so whomever they call using their cell phone would show up as a New City, New York phone number.

as far as maura saying her sister,

Do you really think (if maura was involved in a hit and run) that she would tell her supervisor)

She likely said "My sister" and hoped that the supervisor wouldn't pry any further for information.

As to how maura would get back to her security desk in her state,(She would have to, to establish allibi).... Besides, it would likely take someone some time for something that big to sink in fully. Adrenaline rushing and her knowing she had to get back to work, would help her make it back. The hit and run happend 0.9 miles from her security desk, so we are not talking about a long drive here.

If Maura was somehow involved in the Vasi hit, there are two possibilities:

1. She was driving the Saturn, she was in a hurry, and possibly she struck Vasi and didn't realize she had hit anyone -- maybe he stumbled into her vehicle and it was just a glancing blow. And she didn't know about it until she got that call that came from a phone on campus ... possibly someone saw and recognized her car.

2. Someone else was driving her Saturn, she had loaned it for a quick errand, and that person hit Vasi, then called Maura at the security desk from a campus phone and told her what happened. It was Maura's car.

Her remark "My sister" ... did Maura belong to a sorority? If not, was she in the habit of calling close girlfriends "sisters"?

Advocate,

there is not one shred of evidence out there that a phone call is what upset maura.

Early on, police were trying to link something to causing maura's breakdown at work and they also were going off the police report that maura's supervisor did fill out the next day in which the supervisor noted maura said "My sister"

Police saw that maura talked to her sister at 10:10 p.m. and from that made the leap that this is what maura must have gotten upset from.

Problem is, maura was found upset after 1 a.m. in the morning.

That 10 o clock phone call is not what upset her and police got it wrong.

So now we have to figure out what really upset maura.

When maura was found by the supervisor, she WAS NOT ON A PHONE.

There would only be maura's cell phone, which you can see above has all of her phone calls from that night listed.

The only "Campus phone" maura had access to was a phone at her security desk which was used by the supervisors and campus police.

hey orko- I think your forgetting about another call that she recieved that night, it was shortly after 1 I believe. If any call reduced her to a zombie-like state it is much more likely that this is the one.
In early media reports there is a direct quote from UMass police to where they specifically say that they traced the call to an on-campus phone but they have no way of knowing who was on the other end. That means that it was a call placed from one of the phones that are in public areas of the school.

I agree with you that it could take some time for what she had done to really sink in.
Say she's driving and he just comes out of nowhere and she hit him; it doesn't eccesarily mean that she hit him head on and he flew into her windshield.
She could have been in a sort of "instant denial" over what happened; kind of in shock and not even really believing that it really just happened.

So then, a short time later one of her friends calls her and tells her yes, there are cops and ambulances all over the place and the kid clearly got injured. I could see that reducing someone to the condiditon maura was found in. In reality there's not that many more scenarios that explain her state of mind at that point.

Another thing is that it seems like that phone call, or whatever placed her in this so called zombie like state was the catalyat to the whole chain of events that took place culminating in her dissapearance on monday.
It seems to me like something major happened that night.

I'm glad that you persnally went and checked out the umass campus, when I moved to Amherst a few years ago I couldn't believe how close the accident scene was to her job. It made me serously question everything that has been told to the media by the family. The family made it out like it would be literally impossible for her to hit him, which is just flat out wrong. They said that it would take her 10-15 min to walk to her car and then anther 10-15 to drive to where he was hit. Well she was working a late shift. She could have parked her car right in front of the dorm and walked there in about 2 mins, then she could have driven to where he was hit in about 1-2 mins. Making the round trip about 5-7 min potentially. Clearly enough time to leave her job and make it back to the desk without being noticed by her supervisor, which made rounds about every 30 mins.
I just find it highly suspicous how hard the family tried to push that it was impossible fr her to have hit him. In the early days of the forums back in they explained many times how impossible it would have been. Well we now know that they were lying about that. That doesn't neccesarily mean that maura hit him, but it is suspicous. They obviously want Maura viewed in the best light but when people suddenly realize that they've been lying about something major like that, well then that's going to make people take a closer look at what happened and everything that's been said by the famil in the past.

Jenkins,

To be fair to the family on this one, I believe much of the early news reporting has a lot to blame for why maura and the petrit vasi angle was dismissed.

Even in that wonderfully written five part piece by maribeth conway, she follows up with a story about a possible connection to the vasi hit and run but then all but dismisses it by saying that the vasi incident happened "off-campus."

I have seen other news reports that describe the vasi incident as happening across town.

Just reading reports like that, I quickly dismissed the vasi angle (early on)

But I have since changed my mind.

Visiting the campus, I was stunned at how close the intersection was to where maura worked.

It still doesn't mean maura was involved in it in anyway, but I personally can't dismiss a possible link and I have gone over the scenario ad naseum.

Maura up and left the umass campus on the following monday.

school was cancelled that Friday (morning after maura's meltdown) due to snow.

The school newspaper didn't get around to releasing the vasi story until the very same day maura bolted (monday). that is one creepy coincidence.

More on the mysterious phone call:

I have never found a direct link to an on-campus phone call that maura supposedly received that thursday night that upset her. This call was to have come in at 12:40 if it is to be believed.

Here is the actual articles done (where the confusion may have come from).

Feb 27, 2004 ---- Caledonian Record
There also is the mysterious phone call Murray received while working as a security person at a residence hall at the UMass Amherst campus Feb. 5.
The call reportedly reduced Murray to tears and her supervisor had to take her home because she was so distraught.
UMass Detective Davies said his department has been able to track the phone call.
“We know the location,”; Davies said.“We have not been able to identify to whom she was speaking. Her friends have no idea who called her.&quot.”

Boston Globe March 2, 2004
Investigators have determined the origin of an unusual telephone call that Murray received a few nights before she fled the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The conversation upset her so much that she had to be escorted from her job to her dorm room.

The call, according to UMass police Lieutenant Robert Thrasher, came from one of Murray's two sisters. But Thrasher said police have yet to receive an explanation of what was so upsetting.

As you can see, it sounds like police were on to something by identifying the phone call that upset maura in the February article.

But a few days later, and you see what they concluded (what they acutally had traced was the 10 o clock phone call between maura and her sister).

Now there was a 12:40 on-campus phone call that police were interested in concerning maura.

However, that phone call was 12:40 p.m. on the monday when maura went missing as she had called a fellow nursing student to arragne returning scrubs.

See where the confusion can come in.

I believe there was no 12:40 a.m. on-campus phone call to maura that thursday night she had the breakdown at work.

Orko - She lived in a college town. There could have been 1,000 people acting weird within the hour of a hit and run. I would like to read the rest of your theory to support this.

James Renner makes mention she searched on her PC about what drinking does to an unborn fetus and directions to stowe before she left. To me this supports more the reason for her breakdown and runaway. Her sister could have called and said "You may be pregnant" This would also explain the shroud of mystery from her family not giving any background info as to why she left.

I consider this one of the weakest of possibilities, just slightly stronger than the Bigfoot abduction theory - barely. Anyone who has seen what a car can look like after hitting a pedestrian wouldn't likely be pushing this theory. He needs lots more if he expects anyone to fall for a Vasi/Maura connection. Not just the fact that they were around a mile away from each other when Vasi was hit, if he was hit. There were suggestions he might have been car surfing. No one, least of all Vasi, knows exactly what happened. How Maura magically appears on that scene, is still a mystery to me and one of the more bizarre theories to me.

The supervisor did call LE when she heard that MM went missing so I do think the phone call may have some importance as to what happened or motivated MM to leave.

The only other major event I think happened would be the first car crash and her going to her father's hotel room.

Vasi was hit by a car, that has all been but established (after the fact of course).

His injuries were consistent with being struck by a car. The friend he was with that night has been very clear that he was not driving vasi around in a car and vasi himself has noted that he was on foot. Not many scenarios left. A coconut did not fall from a tree and do this to him.

As far as maura goes:

She has a breakdown at work (just happens to come 20 minutes or so after vasi was impacted).

She is in a zombie-like state and won't even acknowledge her supervisor, instead staring straight ahead after the supervisor asks what the matter is (yeah just typical college student behavior .... RIGHT)

She is so overcome with emotion that she can't sign herself out of work (more typcial college student behavior)

Her father all of a sudden swoops into town less than 48 hours later to (Help maura get a new car) He probably would've came on friday but Umass was nailed with a big snow storm

Maura's car is kept away from everyone over the weekend.(they only use fred's car, even when supposedly shopping for a car for maura ... You would think they would bring her car along to trade it off if they find her a new car).

Maura bolts the campus the same day the vasi story hits the campus newspaper (nothing to see here) the newspaper article clearly points out that police are looking for clues and asking for the campus'es help.

Maura may not have anything to do with the hit and run, but way too many coincidences to just say nah, not related at all.

AMHERST - University of Massachusetts police report there are no new leads in the disappearance of nursing student Maura Murray.

There is some truth here. Maura was crying and Vasi was likely hit by a car. All you need do now is put Maura in the car that hit Vasi. Or at a minimum, show Maura's car hit Vasi.

And you should be aware that you are no where near doing that.
