If Fred was not involved with the search of the A fram and was actually in warren, then can we lety fred off the hook for causing the dog to go through the sliders? Fred was in Warren with a PI during the search of the AFrame in OCT,2006. Family awaited in the lodge while the searches took place on this weekend. After this weekend we were no longer notified of any searches by PIs because they did not want us present if they found something concerning Maura.

I also found this statement to be rather interesting considering he claimed to believe he thought it was Fred driving the vehicle on this night. CS implying people from MA do what? Go to NH to commit suicide or shove rags up their tailpipes? It sounds like he had seen rags in tailpipes on MA reg´d vehicles before? FWIW, white rags attached to cars is an internationally recognized sign the car is disabled/broken down. In Portugal there is even a law one has to attach a white rag to ones car if broken down by the roadside.

Trying to draw pictures of Smith wandering around, looking under cars, examining exhaust pipes. "Wondering" out loud about his suspicious behavior. The simpler explanation of people being able to see the rag because it was exposed, the simpler explanation is the correct one. Two people are telling you everyone saw the rag in the tailpipe. Instead of making stories up, you should inquire about what is known. If you really want to make up stories, you should at least also try to find the simplest answer rather than going immediately to the "brain tumor" explanation. You would be much better served using simple explanations. You really don't have the talent to make involved, complex stories. Bill

Just me--paris wrote: This is going to sound dumb, but I'll risk it again. Maura may have put that rag there to keep small animals or rodents from taking a warm spot in the tailpipe and possibly stuck up and in there. Heck 8 packs, lol I've been cutting up those plastic holders for many years. Google "plastic rings animals" and see the lovely pictures of what they do to animals. It takes seconds and helps protect wildlife. Just me--paris wrote: Anyway, if the rag was just placed in there, I could also mean she was just giving up. OR a sign that she needed help. In Portugal there is even a law one has to attach a white rag to ones car if broken down by the roadside. I spent some time Googling this last night, because it sticks in my head that people used to do this - stick a white rag in the tailpipe to signal that they needed help, or that they would be back, or something like that. I did find many cases where people are told to tie a white rag to their antenna or hang it out a window (somehow) to signal they need help. I didn't find any reference at all to putting it in the tailpipe, yet I really do feel like, in the olden days this was how it was done. Anybody else remember this? Even so, since I can't find any mention of it on the web, and Fred didn't say he told MM to do that, and in fact said something completely different, I don't know if she would have ever heard that she should put a rag in the tailpipe as a signal of some kind. One of the things that has bothered me too is Fred leaping in to state that it was a rag he had given Maura and that he told her to put it there - it's just odd. Plus, unless it was his old tshirt or boxers or something recognizable, how could he be certain it was the one he gave her? I keep thinking that I've seen it mentioned that it was a shop rag, and I used to have red ones and white ones - they all look the same. Anybody know what kind of rag it was?

Can someone with certainty say if the rag was white or red? Red is usually used to indicated caution.

I mean if I saw a rag, a gerbil or a turkey drum stick sticking out of a tailpipe, it would get my attention. Have we done the rag thing to death yet? Any other tidbits to glean from its existence? There has been bullshit stated about the rag for years. Likely all of it wrong. Now if you think behind the rag there was a towel and behind that the lost Dutchman's mine, great. Realistically, it appears there was a single rag, hanging out of the tailpipe that several people on the scene saw. Others, making wild speculation created towels, rags pushed up into the catalytic converter and many other stories. We should all now try to wrap our head around the fact that it was just a rag hanging out of the muffler. Next we should wrap our head around, why does it matter, because unless you think the rag actually ate Maura it would seem to have little to do with her disappearance. And I use the work "little" meaning "absolutely nothing" unless you think the rag scared Maura into running from the car? Bill

Lighthouse 101 wrote: <quoted text> Two car accidents that are probably (in my opininon) a result of consuming alchol and she is worried about rodents? Well, I don't know that Maura was drinking. Police said they thought Fred was driving at first, I wonder why. How about if this were a set up of sorts? Small chance, maybe, maybe not. I doubt most people would care about "rodents", lol. I was thinking rabbit or kitten,~more that kind of thing b/c I've heard of instances where a small animal will try to go into warm places like a tailpipe, only to become stuck.. It just doesn't add up to me that Maura would even bother to put a rag in the tailpipe when it's scalding hot. Even if 10 minutes went by before she did it,(if she did), why would she bother warning people about a stalled car when she's calling lights out on herself/or running away with someone? JMO, and loads to consider.

Don'tchya think she'd have taken her hair binder and secured it to the antenna or one of the wipers? As if seeing a car broke down were not enough of a clue that someone had left their car. Could she think "I'm broke down now, oh gee look in the tailpipe and you'll get it. Or Gee, I'm going to go off myself and my dad will get the message. OR Gee, I just wiped out. I'm gonna stuff this rag up there and hopefully drive off". OR HELP< SOMEONE THREATENING IS TO MY RIGHT...should something happen, this is what I hope you'll think when you see this rag. Apparently Officer Smith was shook up when he went to the W-mans to ask where the girl was, the one with the rag in her tailpipe. As IF they'd know, the car wasn't even facing them. Sure, it could have some old roots to the concept back in the day. In a world with horse and buggy, maybe it meant you'd be back to claim it. Heck if I know. But MAURA or WHOEVER was driving, backed up parallel to the road, so that rag was done either more toward the last minutes, or straight off a flatbed...lol, it's really worn thin now.

It bothers me that the family had to look at the area where her car was at FIRST. She moved it according to the other neighbors. So the second are that was a bit further East would have been more telling as to footprints and/or more that one set.

So the SECOND AREA that was a bit further East, would have been more telling as to footprints and/or MORE THAN one set. And to elaborate, a true and accurate look at her final resting spot with the Saturn.
