It's all really irrational, isn't it, Wowzer? You and Bill have been around a loooong time, and are proven to be reasonable, intelligent, and have great senses of humor. The humor has diminished over time, just as my patience has with stupidity and nonsense. Pure nonsense. Unsupported assertions that are not backed up by reason and/or proof; a playground for magical thinkers and mean-spirited accusers. That about sums it up, year after year after year.

I feel sure you are not expecting an answer to your question(s). Late night, incoherent ramblings are now not associated with just Shack alone; there is a chorus.

The most obvious, significant questions remain unanswered, probably even to authorities, or they'd have found Maura by now. Why did she suddenly leave UMASS? Why did she lie about the reason for her departure? Did she travel alone, or did someone accompany her? Did she intend to meet up with someone? If so, where? What was her destination? How might her activities and relationships prior to her disappearance play into her sudden leaving?

When Shack is ready to answer these important questions, then we'll all know.

Overall, it's an interesting social phenomenon that cases of the missing, or victims of violence/murder are discussed on forums, blogs and news-sites.

It's good when the public is informed, participates and shares ideas; bad when the whackos come out of the walls (as they do in all of these cases) and play out their own issues. Bill is entertained, informs and educates; I'm a student of psychology; Wowzer has also informed by her local interest, and has been boots on the ground, and others have a legal perspective.

Bill, I'm still seeking another word for "entertainment" that will more closely fit my interest level. I'm entertained by media, books, and the charm and wit of others, not by depravity of thought, incomplete thought processes and faulty conclusions spoken as gospel here.

It's fair to say I'm intrigued by the obviously disordered and dysfunctional thinking that is revealed by posters who might be better off playing bingo, as Wowzer suggests.

I'm "intrigued" by these Topix posts, and find it remarkable how little is known after so many years. That's about it.

Irrational! You betcha. You've said a mouthful and I couldn't agree more. And no I don't expect an answer.
Now I'm off to do a little Christmas shopping and enjoy the rest of the sunny crisp day.
I'm hoping by the time I get back our armchair detectives will have this case solved.
And you are corrrect. After several years of BS patience can get a little thin.

I agree. In addition to Maura and a handful of other disappearances I follow online for updates, I also am intrigued by the online theories surrounding the disappearance of the McStay family. God only knows what happened to those people, and I hope for their family's sake that they really did flee the country and are safely living under the radar somewhere. What is odd to me is how so many strangers will hold tightly to their theories, based on nothing but hunches that are based on limited info available to the public, and become nasty with each other in their online feuds over what happened to a family they never met/knew.

Topix seems to be an extreme example of that, complete with "outings" and outlandish accusations about conspiracies of posters etc. I don't find it to be entertaining but rather sad.

As for Bingo, well, there's an iPhone app for that too now. Personally I prefer the Angry Birds, but to each his own.:-)

it appears it happened to me when JL checked an IP address and attributed it me when, infact, it was not me. It appears he passed this information to JR who printed it and caused me much undo harrasement.I have never been to Taunton.

Ha!Ha! "There's an app for that." And Angry Birds. It fits.
As soon as the Boston online news sites required names, real names, and connected IP addresses to FB, commentary has been nearly non-existent.
Topix is uniquely positioned to capture the Angry Birds. LOL
Hope you and yours will enjoy a Happy Bird-Day.:)

Citigirl says she is only interested in finding Maura and not dragging people through the mudd yet she acts otherwise. Citigirl continues to drag JR through the mudd. Citigirl refuses help to put up posters. Citigirl offers zero info on this forum. How are you trying to find maura on this Forum may I ask?

I originally came here to Citigirls defense on my very first post, I have seen a huge swing in citigirls posts. My oppinion is that she does not care about maura at all and only cares about herself ie the Renner Crapping. I am not the only poster seeing the same thing. I have had many email me expressing the same thoughts.

I think Maura is alive and Citigirl is helping to Cover. It will all come out in Renners Book.

I don't see a family member here accepting or looking for help from others that are willing to help. I see deflection.

JWB, I honestly hope you are right in that Maura in alive. It would be a lot better to think she is living a new life than murdered or dead by whatever means (suicide, accident, etc).

My opinion since I came here has been that Citigirl is here to protect Maura's and the family's reputations, and to correct people when their postings are not in line with the facts she knows. Not to try to find Maura on the forum. When I was told that on the old forums run by the family that no one was allowed to ask questions or talk about Maura's past, that also added to my belief that there was something in her past that the family didn't want the public to know. I've not been able to put my finger on what or why they would not want her past to be known. I finally decided it was none of my business and that it's their right to do as they please, whether it helps find Maura or not. It's their family, not mine. It's been very obvious to me since around the time DC left that there is no real help I can offer here.

I wish your offer to put up posters had been accepted. If my family member goes missing today, I would want help from anyone to put up posters whether I like them or not. I wonder if your offer would have been accepted had you emailed the family directly. Topix discussions grow so heated and there are so many misunderstandings (like your money where your mouth is comment).

With that said, I don't see any benefit for the family to cover up that she is alive. Maybe I'm wrong and I hope that I am. It would be great if Renner or anybody else could confirm that she is alive, without putting her personal safety at risk. If she did run away and is being protected to stay hidden, then I would think it had to be something pretty bad she was running from.

There are so many small inconsistent comments and actions that go against any reasonable logic.

Lighthouse,
That call left me with questions as well. It was suggested that Maura, on the day of or day before her disappearance she had phoned the couple about availability of a condo they owned. I believe that same week...Maura's family were placing missing posters of Maura all over the place. The couple must have seen these posters?????????? Newspapers, websites, etc....had photos of Maura. Photos of Maura everywhere. Given that Maura and her family had vacationed in Bartlett (renting that condo????) for several years....why didn't Mrs. S, give the family a jingle and say, "You might want to know that I received a call from Maura hours before her disappearance." Curious as to why this did not happen.

RozShoem,
Interesting idea, but I fear that LE likely never thought of checking such a thing, since they seem to have pretty much dismissed witness RO and her observation of the likely MA-plated red truck in Swiftwater. At least, that is my understanding of things.
Bumping for Maura,
People close to Maura knew that given the condition of the Saturn, she would never have driven it far into NH. Her car was in poor condition to the extent that she had been riding w/friends around campus and Amherst if she needed transportation. Maura was bright and very aware of the car's poor condition which makes one wonder why she would attempt to drive it miles north into NH. The only instance where she might have attempted this is if someone had been accompanying her in a second vehicle. The question IS...why take two vehicles? Why was it important for her NOT to be riding in the other vehicle? Why do people not want to be seen together? WHY not tell someone where she was going? She had survival training, was a hiker, etc...in terms of safety she knew the importance of letting someone know where she would be, where she was going....and yet she told no one. She evidentally did not want anyone to know she was taking this trip. Why would anyone do this? Why all of the secrecy? Two vehicles. Not telling friends or family about her trip....and she had done this before. So it was very important to her not to be found in the SAME vehicle with this traveling companion...and apparently she did not want anyone to know she would be traveling somewhere with this person or she would have told someone. What would be the purpose of all of this secrecy? What type of situation would involve all of this secrecy?

The problem I have is why didn't the family check the cell phone bill earlier? They have MM's phone records to see where she was calling. It was on her cell phone bill that billy's mother gets. They waited to call until September. Thats makes no sense to me.

Aftermath- you asked some good Q's and raised some good points in your posts.

It seems to me like a lot of those Q's can be answered by her travelling with someone up to NH. If she was teavellIng with someone then the whole trip wasn't in secret, she just didn't tell her friends & family; but someone knew, the person she was going with. Her traveling with someone explains the whole secrecy thing IMO, but that's obviously assuming she was with someone which is something we don't know at this point.

Couple Q's of my own: how do we know she thought her car was soooo bad? Who besides the family actually said this? I know it's said she was catching rides aroun Amherst but did any of her friends say this or was this all from her family? It looks to me like that info all came from the family.
We know she had just driven her car back to Amherst from the south shore so her car couldn't have been that bad, it made the 2.5 hr drive just fine. Yea her car wasn't great, no Saturn is, but there's no way I was runnin on 3 cylinders as evidenced by the fact that she just drive it back to school and it was able to drive that far up to NH just fine.

It's possible her car wasn't near as messed up as we are being lead to believe by the family, and it's very possible she did not think it was that messed up either. She could've easily thought that it just drove a couple hours to Amherst why can't it make it 3 hours up to Nh?

It's so hard to say but something tells me she was going with someone or meeting someone up there. Couple things that indicate this to me is the fact she was searching for condos but Ono had 280$, you can't pay for one night of a condo with that and why would she need a whole condo for herself anyways? That indicates to me that someone else was paying for the place. Something else is the amount of alcohol she brought. It's not that much for a college girl who likes to drink but it does look like it would be the perfect amount for 2 people for a few days.

Also, after she crashed she ddnt seem that particularly worrie about gettIng a ride. She has just crashed, she's all alone in the middle of nowhere, shouldn't a ride be her top concern? It just looks like she knew someone would be coming along to pick her up. It could just be that she knew she was young and pretty and would have no problem catching a ride but idk, it seems like it could be more than that.
And then one other thing that directly points to her knowing someone was coming is that scarinza said that she only took the bottle of kahlua with her when she left the car. That makes no sene if she's alone, who drinks kahlua by itself?

Idk, but there are more than a couple things that point to her not traveling up NH all alone.

If I recall correctly, police had checked all records and therefore the family most likely assumed phone calls had been checked. Wonder if Billy's mother checked phone bills months further back than the one containing Feb 9 phone call. Wonder if Maura had ever phoned the Wakefield number before.

She didn't have to apply as a transfer, wait for the processing of her application, and all that stuff. She just registered for classes. Jimmy Bulger's brother was president of UMass at the time, so it was no problem.

My argument against someone she knew travelling with her or even we family knowing where she is and covering up is if that is what happened, then the NHSP are really really really bad investigators.
We are about to hit the 9 yr mark, that's a long time. If someone she knew killed her, or if the family is hiding her, LE should've Ben able to figure that out a long time ago. This is why mos murders get solved, because it's someone the person knows that usually kills them.
It's stranger on stranger crimes that go unsolved for this long generally, stranger crimes are just so hard to solve its ridiculous. The longer this goes one the more and more likely it is that it was truly a stranger that abducted her.

If renner is ably to discover she's alive and the family was hiding her then any investigator who ever touches this case should be fired for incompetence, plain and simple. Same thing if she was murdered by someone she knew. Let's say she got pregnant by some other guy and he killed her. If the NHSP can't figure that our and renner can they they should be fired for incompetence.

I believe the NHSP are in general competent investigators, maybe not the best murder police ever, but competent. They've put A lot Of work into this case, biggest case in Nh history actually. If they put all that work in and it was some bf of hers that killed her or the family is hiding her then the NHSP seriously needs to revamp their investigative units because that would be piss poor work.
