it would. still doesn't make sense to me, horse, donkey or otherwise, that her transfer from West Point to UMASS was an academically smooth transition, major to major, and credit to credit.
Quite true. A student has to either plan well ahead for a seamless transfer or take a semester off between the two schools. As I've said before, you can't just decide in, say, late fall semester to attend another school starting the following spring semester. I'm not saying it's absolutely impossible, but between WP and UMass, the chance is pretty slim. Applications, as everyone knows, take time to process. But I'm not sure how her transition from WP to UMass would bear on her disappearance. Certainly could. It just seems that she was settled into UMass for about a year or so before she vanished.

When she left - if she left - she may have not made up her mind whether to stay or leave UMass. She may have been playing for time to think it all over. She may have been very confused or she may have known exactly what she was doing. Hard to say.

many unknown variables. the transition might have come to bear in terms of a longer road ahead...extended time in making up a semester or pre-reqs, more expense, and perhaps even a sense of failure for having disappointed herself or a parent for having left the more prestigious West Point for a state school. maybe yes, maybe no. no one knows. or someone knows.
and, Beag, you certainly can't jump into D1 sport mid-stream without some finagling...even if, as we have been told, she was accommodated by a certain coach.

Beagle,
"Dropping out" was not on her agenda of things to do. Had she planned to "drop out" she would not have taken her textbooks with her and she certainly would not have contacted some faculty and her supervisor to let them know she'd be away for a few days. She would have just disappeared. Please do not tell me that she had the textbooks with her as they served as a transitional object!...someone mentioned she had her favorite book with her because she planned to suicide........ Now really....this is a bit much. The ONLY thing in that car that someone considering suicide might use would be the alcohol. But when about to suicide, there are few who'd be dedicated to mixing drinks. It's be straight out of the bottle (Jack Daniels or something similar}. She was abducted by someone she knew or possibly someone she did not know. Given the short timeframe of when the SBD spoke with her and the officer arrived, abduction seems more likely.
roz aka firecat
we do NOT know if dropping out was on her agenda or not. Her books could have simply been in the car already when she left for NH. She did tell her profs about a death - perhaps that was to buy time until she got the nerve to tell everyone she dropped out. amazed mw - maura was human - she had CHOICE of her actions. Not one person can say what was or what was not on her agena. the ONLY one that can answer that was maura herself - or god /jesus since she was catholic and all. You know excatly where I am going with that.

Hi Dawn. Are you the telecom Dawn?

What does "Catholic and all" mean?

How do you know she was Catholic?

What does "and all" mean?

Why is her church affiliation, denomination, or religion relevant?

And where exactly ARE you going with it?

Thank you.

i can assure you i have a better handle on this than you do. math is fine. other pre-reqs would not be transferred, or were not taken. nor has it ever been made clear whether she transitioned to UMASS without a semester break. nor do i believe anyone with feathers.
This is the age of the "portfolio...." If these can be accepted, so too can higher level courses be considered, accepted. I had read that she transferred in January. After 6 years, maybe you should begin to at least consider what those w/or without feathers say. I consider everything then toss what seems ridiculous. Sometimes I even save some of what may seem ridiculous. For example, what you said about it all having started at Amherst. I've saved info beginning at Amherst for not just MM but for others as well. Don't know if you have feathers but you mentioned having donkey sense.

Well, I have an idea that MM may have been one of the few people who actually read her books...did not just leave them around in her car. Textbooks are expensive...they are not something that most people leave in their cars. A secret? In this day and age? Next you'll be insisting that she had Elvis with her in her car that evening.

Aka Firecat? You HAVE to be Dawn with the Wind, right? Yeah...she most likely had left expensive textbooks in her car in case she and Elvis (he was with her of course) decided to rent a room. They could use a textbook or two to prop open a window. Unfortunately, I DO have a good idea where you may be going with "that." LOL. Maura was not a drama queen.

Wow, Snowy... Do I detect a little gossip mongering in the cobwebs of your donkey-sense mind? Accommodated by a certain coach? Pull in your claws, Snowy. That was a bit much. Really. Maura certainly disappointed no one. It is an honor even to be accepted at WP. How many females in your high school graduating class were accepted by WP? A longer road ahead? Maybe you would have had to take extra semesters, but this in no way means that Maura had to take that route. You're sauntering down projection land.... If someone is accepted to the chemical engineering program at WP, they have a strong academic background and leadership ability. Not everyone is accepted at WP....and don't speak down about state schools. State schools have very good programs and reputations. UMASS Amherst has excellent faculty.

does*not*matter. as i said before,(and you were probably around then), the rigor of a prestigious institution, and especially in engineering, is course-specific, not well-rounded, as you'd find at a public institution/state school, such as UMASS.
there are credits/requirements that do not transfer and/or must be met.
it is highly unlikely she was able to neatly transfer school-to-school, major-to-major and credit-to-credit without a lapse.
in addition, we've been down this path before...and i do detest redundancy.
I believe what I'm "hearing"...in between the lines...that Snowy had at one time transferred and it may not have been a smooth transition. Believe me Snowy.....any institution of higher education would welcome with open arms a WP transfer. The credits would transfer and some of Maura's courses at WP were higher level (more credits) than entry-level courses at UMASS. It would seem reasonable to assume that higher level math, for example, would be needed to enter a chemical engineering program. This may have been the case with other courses as well. Many people have to take remedial courses when they enter college. This was not the situation for Maura. She was academically sound, superior.

I am feeling a bit optimistic because now there is
a new Haverhill Police Chief. Byron Charles was on
duty the night Maura went missing on 112, on February 9, 2004. Even though he was NOT at the scene that night, he was chasing down a "hooded
sweatshirt guy" the western end of Central St.
Certainly he must have a finger on the pulse.

There were 4 Haverhill Officers on duty that night....now there are perhaps 7 officers.

At a gathering of family and investigators, it was spoken that there were issues of "jurisdiction".
Perhaps these "Jurisdicitons" will unite for the good of the outcome. Stop blaming Maura.
Her scents end in mid-air. That suggests pick-up.

I think: first find Maura, then go on to the blame.

you are incorrect, as usual. fool.
ok....now, stop puffing up around WP. good that you are so impressed, but i am not. UMASS, especially, is well-sustained by the numbers.
doesn't matter if the courses are at a "higher level" to transfer or not. one must fulfill the credits/hours in one's major in order to graduate.
you fail to understand this basic point.
why did she leave WP?
and, more importantly, WHY did she leave UMASS?

I do agree that this is the most likely explanation.
My hunch would be that the mysterious red pick-up truck as observed by witness RO in Swiftwater village could well be the vehicle in question here.
Whether friend or foe is another matter altogether.

I love hearing this. Always makes me laugh. It also always makes me wonder what would have happened if Maura had told someone where she was going. When she was leaving, when she would be back, where she was staying. And what if she had stayed at her car instead of running away? I wonder if we would be having this conversation at all if she had just stayed at the car after her accident? I have said before and have warned my children throughout their childhood. There are some people who are put on this earth only to be a warning to others of what not to do. Unfortunately, Maura, who had so much potential, may have been one of those people. I wish she had just stayed at her car and taken whatever lumps she might have had coming. While her possible penalty might have vastly outweighed her offense, it should serve as a warning to others, life isn’t always reciprocal, be aware. If she had just waited at the car, I am sure I wouldn’t still be here, all these years later discussing it with people, a couple of which I seriously doubt, I would ever be caught dead talking to in polite society.
