Alcohol not only would have impaired her judgment to do things rationally. The adrenaline rush she would have had knowing all the trouble she was about to be in would have made her desperate to leave the scene one way or another.
It would have lowered her guard and left her very vulnerable if she did hitch a ride.
I just can't ever be sold on the "lost or ran into the woods and died" theory.
I have always believed she hitched a ride and met foul play.
Is it possible that whoever she was going to meet picked her up and shortly there after she decided to run from it all and start completely over. Id say from her bad behavior- its very possible too.
I'm not trying to sell anything. These are things I have seen personally over the years, many times. It is one of several possibilities. And I don't believe that Maura was fall down drunk. But drunk enough to effect her thought process, probably, scared enough that she knew that she would have been arrested, definitely. Knowing how that would affect her life, absolutely.

I don’t think the perp just happened by, I think he followed her from town (Woodsville). My point was that nobody saw Morgan being abducted in a busy, well-lit area, ergo it's very plausible that nobody would have seen Maura being inveigled into a vehicle. The school bus driver stopped to help but the other residents stayed in their houses and it doesn’t sound as if they were gawking out their windows 100% the entire time. Or perhaps they were just shortsighted.
I highly doubt she was driving in tandem with anyone else that night. Why wouldn’t she have taken her toiletries if she was being whisked away for the evening? It makes sense to me that someone offered her a lift back to town (or wherever) and then harmed her.
I like this theory. Although I am rethinking Maura had a full gas tank. I've been looking at a Saturn same year, make and model as Maura's. With the car off, the gas needle points to E. Maybe the fuel level indicator was not working in Maura's car? Or the fuel pump? IDK. Fred said the car started right up so probably not out of gas.
Thornton, NH was on the drug radar at the time Maura went missing.

Another interesting point about the Chandra Levy case was what happened to Gary Condit. I make this statement not in support of the abduction theory, but to show that perception is very often off. Condit was publicly accused by other Congressmen and tried and convicted in the media.
He shagged an intern and then lied about the affair to LE when questioned about her disappearance. What would you have expected the masses to do, nominate him for sainthood?

Even if the gas level was half full she may have wanted to stop in Woodsville to top up the tank (and have a restroom break) before heading up to Bartlett. Taking Route 112 to Bartlett is not the obvious choice so I think it’s possible she might have asked someone (perhaps with MA plates) for directions and they saw her as prey and stalked her.

There are many places along that corridor that were on the drug radar and rife with the seedy characters that go along with the trade. Not to mention the RSOs, awol RSOs, migrant workers and local scallywags — any of whom could have taken advantage of a pretty coed driving solo.

And serial killers, let’s not forget about them. No rule-out for Israel Keyes yet?

I thiink you guys are missing a HUGE thing when you say no searches were cpnducted past the 5 mile point; the HELICOPTER searches.
On wednesday morning they were up in the fish and game helicopter and searched 20 miles of 112 along the edges of the road looking for any signs that any human entered the woods, and found nothing..
In addition to that, the conditions were in their favor; according to both Lt.. Scarinza and lt. Bogardus the "conditions could not be better for tracking" due to fresh snowfall. Scarinza personally flew in the F&G helicopter and they were using FLIR to assist in the search for prints. Scarinza describes being able to see game trails and animal tracks clearly, and human foorprints. WHen you know what you're looking for it is easy to distinguishh between animal tracks and human footprints. They flew 20 miles of 112, that's the entire length from 302 up to N woodstock and they saw no human foorprints leading into to the woods. They actually did this twice, just to be surre.
You gotta remember there was 2.5' of snow, it was a fresh snowfall and the snow was fluffy. She would've left a HUGE trail walking into the woods in those conditions, one that would've been relatively easy to spot, and there was no such trail. If they could see animal tracks, game trails and human foorprints; they should've seen her trail if she left one.
Now that obviously isn't 100%, it is POSSIBLE that they missed her trail, however unlikely that is. But when you combine that with the fact that the tracking dog lost her scent 100yds up the road, that paints a pretty strong picture indicating that she did most likely catch a ride from the area, and probably caught the ride right where the dog lost here scent. Neither of those alone are 100%, but when you consider both of them I think it is extremely unlikely that she is in the woods anywhere along rt 112. I would think that since they were in a helicopter they flew a few miles at least up 116 looking as well, it would make sense they would do that as well.
So they DID conduct a search ot the whole length of 112, it wasn't a ground search but often times in situations like this an air search is more effective than a ground search. There are more types of searches than ground searches and a ground search just isn't feasible to cover 20 miles.
This is probably why the NHSP has stated in a couple different articles that they believe she caught a ride from the area.
Remember, ground searches aren't the only kind of searches that exist and in a situation like this an air search would be more effective bc it's the only way you're covering 20 miles effectively.
I get what you're saying, Jenkins. But I think it is possible that they missed something past the 5 mile mark, even with the helicopter search. At the time of that search, my interpretation of what Scarinza said on the Disappeared episode is that they wanted to be sure that she didn't enter the woods near the crash site. There was no reason to believe, at that time, that she might have run five or ten miles east. The CW had not reported a possible sighting yet. And humans make mistakes all the time, even when using the best technology. I still feel the most likely scenario is that she got into a car, but I don't think the possibility that she entered the woods can be completely ruled out either. Even Sharon Rausch on the Disappeared show said she believed hypothermia and entering a vehicle were her two theories of what happened to Maura.

that is a moral judgement; the facts would prove his innocence in her murder.
the public would, responsibly, reserve judgement.

This is correct. I didn't go into that depth but the bones that are left are also used. The smallest can be totally destroyed but the bigger ones usually just show the effects from mice and other animals. The exception to that is that bears and very large coyotes can and will actually crush the larger bones to get at the marrow. There is no reason to believe that any of even the large bones will be intact. They may, and they may not. It all depends on what animals contact them and how early. If the contact is too late and the marrow is dried out, or the animals that contact those bones aren't strong enough and only the two exceptions I mentioned are strong enough, then the long bones will probably remain intact, along with the skull which if the skull was intact to begin with almost always seems to survive.

Bubba shagged Lewinsky, and is definition of terms was pretty weak. so who would think that he'd have survived the scandal and turn out to be a highly respected elder statesman?
all the moral judgements, for and against, would not influence or predict that outcome.
so, we're not talking Levy, Harrington or Lewinsky.
i think it is you who diverts away from MM with irrelevant comparisons, at least IMO.

Well for everyone it appears except you/frostman.

I am actually waiting with baited breath to hear how you have actually solved this case and your ironclad reasoning/proof as to why the red truck holds all the answers to Maura's disappearance. Been here almost nine years. Have had to wade through a lot of bullshit in that time, but now, its payoff time.

After you get done, doing whatever it is you and he are doing of course. Don't want to rush you. Everyone, time to listen up, Tang has the answer.

Typically, and this is difficult to do because it depends so much on how it being deployed and IN PARTICULAR the terrain, height, speed, WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, the contrast and size of the object, etc. But typically, helicopters being used in a desert environment are 53-78% effective in finding bodies. They would likely be around 20% effective in the terrain where Maura might have been found and that is with a spotter, not just the pilot and that is looking for a body, certainly not footprints. This would likely drop to probably 5% or less if the helicopter was used between 10am and 1pm because of the high angle of the light source if the sun was even out. Diffuse lighting (as in a cloudy day) makes it even harder to see prints no matter what the time.

Consider these responses a sprint, not a marathon. I will say things when I see people post things I know to be incorrect, unless someone gets to it before me which I see more and more. And I couldn't be more excited about that.

But Tang, again, please tell us all you know about why the red truck is the answer. You said it, it must be true, so tell us.
