What does that mean "A car that strikes someone doesn't have arms to then reach down and scoop up the pieces of plastic and chips of paint it leaves at the scene of the hit and run."?
Information on the Vasi H&R is very hard to find but I have not seen any reference to paint chips or plastic where he was found. Are you saying there wasn't any there or that there was? If there was then I could potentially agree that it was shoddy police work. But if there wasn't then I would say it's a very real possibility that he wasn't hit by a car unless you believe that someone who just accidentally hit a pedestrian had the presence of mind to stop and clean up their mess. The only reasoning I have seen that point to a car hit was that his injuries were more on one side of his body than the other.
My opinion is that they (police) had vasi scooped up from the accident scene (without much to any of a scene investigation taking place) and it wasn't until after the fact that they began to realize they were dealing with something more than just a college kid passing out from being drunk or from being in a bar fight. and by then, it was too late to gather up solid evidence back at the spot vasi was hit.

Police have also told vasi, eventually, that they believe he was the victim of a hit and run.

Yeah like I said, it was a remote possibility in my mind. I didn't think so until I drove to the site and beyond it about 4 miles last week..that road is horrible if anyone were to try and walk it.
Didnt you state in a previous posting you moved to the area a year after Maura disappeared? You also stated that you are friends with the owner that moved into RFs house in 2009. How is it you have been friends with the owner but know nothing about the area they live in until last week when you took a ride to the area as you have stated in your posting? Thank you

This is what I said: "Yeah like I said, it was a remote possibility in my mind. I didn't think so until I drove to the site and beyond it about 4 miles last week..that road is horrible if anyone were to try and walk it."

That does not say "I knew nothing about the area until last week"

Please stop reading more into what I am saying.

I travel that road maybe 5 times a year and I have never driven it with the thought in my head of someone walking along the road.

Best thing to do is never try to help people like this. They create problems then thrust them upon you.

Orko Kringer "A car that strikes someone doesn't have arms to then reach down and scoop up the pieces of plastic and chips of paint it leaves at the scene of the hit and run." is this a fact or your opinion. Is there a witness that states there was pieces of plastic and paint chips where Vasi was injuried? Odd that if there were pieces of plastic and paint chips that were near Vasi when he was found injured that LE would not take it as evidence. The corolla was in another state the night Vasi was injured. I thought it was undetermened as to what happened to him that night.

reposting this question, since it may have been overlooked in my previous post.

quick question for wth-the-original: from either your experience or your understanding of law enforcement protocol with respect to vehicles that may have been abandoned by a driver under the influence, is it common practice for law enforcement to have such vehicles towed and/or impounded in the state of new hampshire? in other states where i've lived, i've often seen abandoned vehicles with some type of notice stuck to the driver side window or markings on the vehicle windscreens or on the body and/or tires.

if anyone else has experience or background relevant to this question, i'd be happy to receive your responses as well.

thanks in advance.

In my state and town if LE feels the vehicle is a danger to others they will try to contact the owner. If they cannot get a hold of the owner they will have the vehicle towed. I dont know what NHs protocol is.

Let me be clear. I think Maura is alive. My opinion based on what I have seen. It is only MY opinion.
May I ask you, where do you think she is living? Outside the US?

Do you have any theories as to how she makes money, supports herself? Do you think she has help from another person who also must have disappeared as the same time or shortly after?

Do you think that after almost 10 years that desire she had to run away from her family may fade some?

Have you ever heard of someone so young, with so few resources, who disappeared succesfully for this length of time?

As do I, hope she is still alive. I just don't think she is.

If the car has been in an accident is is almost always towed. As in, 99% of the time. Its is rarely, almost never towed to a police impound lot, it is almost always towed to the tow company impound lot or yard.

Abandonded vehicles are usually left for a while if the car does not obstruct traffic, if it is off the road on the shoulder. If it sits there a while and it doesn't seem like it is going to be fixed or moved, it is usually towed.

I don't recall ever trying to contact the owner for a car that is just sitting there, unless I know the car and know the person.

Simple answer is this.

Car abandonded after minor accident, towed to tow yard.

Car abandonded due to mechanical problems obstructing traffic, towed to tow yard.

Car abandonded not obstructing traffic, usually left there for a day or so.

I don't buy the lost in the forest scenario either. It may look desolate but the number of ATV's, hunters, bird watchers, nature worshipers, reclusive's, etc. that tramp through these woods in the course of a year, I doubt there is much area that has not been covered many times over.
This is an incorrect assumption.

Just something to consider, do you know that they lost a Lear Jet in those same woods for 3 years?

A lear jet that does not decompose or get eaten and spread about, and is slghtly larger, and shinier, than a 120 pound body.

Do you know that an elderly woman was lost in an area much much smaller than where Maura could have gone, and it took MONTHS to find her body despite a massive search that commenced within hours of when she went missing?

Just something to consider.

It is up to LE or CCU to cross people of the list. They are the ones investigating these cases. There are millions of unsolved cases around the world.Everybody deserves an answer. Sadly to say there arent enough resources to handle all these cases.

thank you, citigirl and frmle. these are helpful answers, especially frmle with your background in nh law enforcement.(out of curiosity, frmle, are you at liberty to disclose the capacity in which you were nhle: state trooper, detective, etc.? i recently learned my elementary school friend is now a detective in tulsa. i've seriously considered meeting up with him and talking to him about maura's disappearance just to get his gut-level impression of the case as a detective.)

i would still also like to know if wth-the-original has any thoughts based on his experiences. for that matter, if jwb, jenkins and wowzer all live in the immediate area, i'd be interested in knowing if they have also occasionally seen other vehicles that appeared abandoned (as opposed to just temporarily parked by hikers, hunters or campers) from time to time.

thanks again.

maura's car was a very dark green (almost black) color of car.

At night with very little light visibility and right after a rounded curve, that type of car would be highly vulnerable to being struck if left there.

They had to move it that night.

The corolla has absolutely nothing to do with anything. That was fred's car he brought to amherst over a day later after vasi's hit and run had already taken place.

I was pointing out that unlike people, vehicles don't have the mental capacity to clean up after themselves when they strike something. If vasi's hit and run would've been investigated the night of the hit and run and moments after it happened, police would find something (car parts, glass fragments, blood stains, hair, paint chips, tread marks and skids).

But they waited (one month to two months) for vasi to recover before they began looking into it and by that time even if they conclude that he was a victim of a hit and run, there would be nothing left at the accident scene for them to use.

23 years as a cop in NH. I was a Detective, criminal investigator for about 17 of those years.

That's all I am comfortable saying, for obvious reasons.
