Lighthouse 101 wrote: <quoted text> FRMLE - Quick question. Was a cell phone triangulation tried? Is this what is referred to many (and misunderstood) as the londenberry ping? How often are cell phone triangulation used and successful? This is not superseding FrmLE on this because I don't know the answer to your specific question but I can tell you this. Triangulation (true triangulation) can only be done with two, usually a minimum of three antenna sites "hearing" the signal at the same time. What is often called triangulation is often actually signal fading, which actually can be done with only one tower. Accuracy can vary widely. Accuracy can also depend on certain assumptions that might be able to be made and on how many cell sites can "hear" the signal. And how good the mapping of the antenna fading is at the site, on the particular antenna. All question that are hard to answer becaus3e it would be based on 2004 technology. I assume you are asking to see if they know where she was during the ping? And a ping is not necessarily going to give you any location information, I don't believe. It takes a lot more work to locate than to see that there was a ping. Certainly in 2004. Not saying they didn't have the cell company do that extra work, just saying it doesn't come with the ping. Bill Your correct about the triangulation, but I just was wondering if LE tried to locate her or her cell phone after she went missing. I know triangulation would require multiple points for "location" but even one tower could give you atleast a decent estimate as to where her cell phone is or was. I think the "ping" thing is a misguided term. Pings are for sonar. I don't think cell waves bounce back. I just want to know if there is any indication that she made it away from the WB curve.

I can't comment specifically on the cell triangulation question. However I do think I have 'read' that there was never any signal from her phone since well before the time of the accident.

FrmLE wrote: <quoted text> Regardless of whether the car was blocking the road or not, it was going to be towed from the scene as a result of the accident. That's how it works. I seriously doubt that Maura would have known what LE policy is regarding towing cars etc, however it is obvious to me that she could not drive the car from the scene and she knew the police were going to be coming sooner or later, probably sooner. I think she decided to leave the car so as not to encounter the Police because she either had been drinking and had alcohol in the car. She may or may not have had a plan about what to do beyond leaving the car, however she gathered her things up and left the car before the cops came. It is important to understand that people do not always make smart decisions, they do not always have a plan about what to do let alone a good plan about what to do. Sometimes,(actually often times) people react on instinct without thinking, they make bad choices and do stupid things. I think I said this before but I had a young man RUN FROM ME AND JUMP OFF A BRIDGE!!!! to avoid a minor alcohol charge. He broke both legs and several other bones. He also turned a violation level offense that carried a $150 fine into a Class A Misdemeanor level Resisting Arrest charge. Now, if you are looking back trying to make sense of that mans actions, based on your common sense at the time you are typing on some blog, can you really say that made sense? Of course not, most of you would sit here and say "he never would have done that, it makes no sense!" Just like you try to apply current common sense to the things that Maura would or wouldn't have done back then. A piece of advice I learned from many years Investigating Crimes, do not apply your common sense to the actions of any other person, especially a person in trouble, using alcohol or drugs, or in emotional or mental distress. I think Maura was at least 3 of those things, I think she was in trouble, she was using alcohol, and she was in emotional distress. Therefore I do not think that trying to speculate on her actions using the 'common sense' principal will give you good results. I have not speculated on her actions. I wasnt there so I have no idea what happened that night except she had an accident and is missing. But I have stated that there is no proof she was drinking and its assumtion. Nobody saw her to say she was intoxicated. I dont know either way whether or not she was drinking.

Agreed, she did not take a blood test and no one gave her field sobriety. However, she DID have alcohol in the car, in an accessible location, and there was alcohol dumped on the snow. Now having alcohol in an open container is in itself a violation of law, so even if she wasn't drunk she was still 'in trouble'. That, combined with the odd circumstances surrounding her leaving UMass and driving to NH with alcohol in the car, AS WELL AS leaving the scene of an accident while intentionally misleading a witness about her calling AAA in an attempt to keep him from calling the police, does make one think she may have been drinking or at least she was violating the law..... If I am sitting inside and I see someone walk in from outside with water on their jacket and folding a wet umbrella, I can make a strong assumption it is raining outside even without stepping into the rain myself.

A "ping", a character, would be sent out to a device. If successful, the device would "pong" back the character. That would be proof that the device was connected to the network. Since phones entered the digital age, the phones act very much like a computer on a network. For the phone and the phone system to know it is hooked to the network by a tower, and which tower and that everything is connected. A phone will ping a tower to let the network know what tower it is using and that it is connected to the network. This happens without you knowing about it. That is how phones are able to switch from tower to tower while traveling. This is slightly simplified, but not by much. Hope this helps. Bill

You can also magnify or shrink your screen image either by holding down the control key (CTRL) on your keyboard and use the scroll wheel on your mouse to enlarge or shrink the image, or use (CTRL) plus the plus/minus sign on your keyboard to do the same.

I'm just as guilty as anyone else, and I've made my mistakes along the way, but I try to respect their long lost privacy, and sensitive to the humiliation of being scrutinized at every turn. just to keep things in perspective. Maura is the child of the child of the cousin of Citigirl as what has been reported in the newspaper. So that is what I mean by saying citigirl is not exactly immediate family. I know I don't know a single cousin's child's child that I have.

What does matter is I have done my best to help find Maura as well as many others that never knew her and are not related.
