Please ignore the Alden Olson stuff. That's the creep who did the videos taunting Maura's family last year.

Not sure of exact timing, but it was all very close together. Of course, damage to the Saturn before it left Amherst doesn't necessarily mean the Saturn struck Vasi, although the body shop guy's personal opinion was that the Saturn had struck someone. There is no reason to believe the police ever actually saw the Saturn's damage, only that they were told about it.
Re this: "Saturn had struck someone" -- from the body shop guy's phrasing, this could mean "struck someone" as in "struck a person's body", or could mean "struck someone's vehicle". Did you get any feel for which scenario he meant?

I wonder if this info is in the NH LE's file even though Smith didn't append it to his official report of the crash on the Rt 112 curve.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The body shop guy said he believed that the Saturn had struck a person. Actually, he said that the Saturn had sustained two separate impacts, one with a person, one with something else. I showed him a photo in the summer of 2008 and he immediately recognized and identified the car even though I never said anything about it. I merely showed him a picture and asked him how he thought the damage might have happened. He knew the car right away, even after 4+ years. He saw the Saturn before it left Amherst, right around the time he also saw the Corolla after the Corolla was crashed. He never said anything about a Vasi hit.

Actually, most or all of the Saturn's damage was sustained before it left Amherst. The body shop guy saw both the Saturn and the Corolla around the same time, and since both cars were owned by the same person, you’d think that Amherst PD, having been informed of this by the body shop guy, would have notified Haverhill PD. IOW, what understandably seemed like a crash to Smith might have been just a spinout. Smith almost certainly assumed initially that the damage happened at the WB curve, but in fact most of the damage did not happen there, maybe none it. Just not sure why this information was not included in the final version of Smith’s crash report.
so, the body shop guy saw both the Saturn and the Corolla in a proximate time span...and they were both registered to the same person.
were both vehicles seen by the body shop guy to provide repair estimates for insurance purposes?
or do you suppose the body shop guy did some work on the Saturn to make it drivable?
MM likely had limited funds; it's hard to believe she could have afforded any out-of-pocket repair of a vehicle.

Not sure why he originally saw the cars. He never said he did any work on either of them. After I showed him a photo of the Saturn, he talked about it quite knowledgeably and then went right on seamlessly to the Corolla, even though I hadn't mentioned anything about the Corolla. He knew a lot without my having to say very much at all, no prompting or anything like that. He did almost all the talking. I just asked him how he thought the damage occurred to the car in the picture I showed him. I didn't say anything about the circumstances or Maura or anything else. I just showed him the picture and asked what he thought caused the damage to the car.

Obviously, if Maura drove the Saturn to NH, then she knew about the damage.

thanks for bringing forward a first-hand witness account from the BSG, and for attaching your name for verification.
so often the source is "we are told...", without verification of information.
seems pretty important that the BSG was the person who knew exactly how much damage to the Saturn prior to the crash in NH.

So FM and/or MM took the Saturn to bady shop. Saturday or Sunday. Or MM did it Friday. Maybe to get it ready for the trip up north?

Hi BillNH .I don't know how Maura got to N.H. over new years or how long she was there.Mr.Renner states Maura was in Goshen but who knows.I would not have a car towed from Wherever to Amherst if it was 'running on 3 cylinders'but thats just me.I am guessing she got a ride with a Hanson/Whitman person to N.H. .Again I am wondering where was the saturn over christmas break and who was driving it.take care philip

I too have been considering an incident involving the Saturn, which must have taken place before MM left Hanson for UMass after winter break. It would be interesting to know when she began refuse to drive the Saturn. It seems she drove it from Amherst to Hanson at the end of the fall semester, and something happened during winter break.
