Thanks to everyone who has already donated to our effort to generate new leads on the upcoming 10th anniversary of Maura's disappearance! We have raised enough to buy full-page ads in Mass and Canada. We're about two hundred short of being able to purchase ads in NH as well.
The campaign ends Monday at noon.
Please spread the word!

Samuel Ledyard wrote: I see two significant differences between the posts. First, there had already been an attempt to identify observer and citigirl was named. Had observer posted on my blog (which is the case with Swartz), I never would have released information about him. So I felt that there was an error that needed to be fixed. Second, he made Suzanne appear to be a credible source; a journalist. Observer, too, was represented as being a friend of Maura's. The Swartz post lacks credibility. The fake email address entered, for example, was hangingaaronswarts. It was a dark joke; lacking credibility. This is important to me because Suzanne's post got a lot of people's hopes up. Without the attempt to make Suzanne "credible" would there have been a search for the identity of the geocities letter author?

Wowzer the real one wrote: Next who is this Swartz and what did they do? Wowser, in case this has not been answered for you yet, Aaron Swartz posted that Maura's body is burried in Hilltop Quarry and was burried there by Butch Atwood. It was posted as fact not opinion. There were subsequent posts, or rather questions, further implicating Butch Atwood.

But read in light of the author's name and email address, I believe that it was intended to be humorous (although, personally, I don't find it funny).

You don't bury someone in a quarry........they are just big holes mostly filled with water. DUMPED would be the correct terminology in this instance.

Aaron Swartz has relatives very close (1/2 mile) to the place where Maura's Saturn was found. Interesting indeed.

I believe you stated that it didn't matter how people viewed the post, it was the intent to present as fact that mattered? If the geocities poster used a humorous moniker it would have been ok?

Let me clarify my position: the geocities post was intended to be read as fact and it was actually read that way. If either of those "elements" were lacking, I would not have looked into the author.
Had the author used a funny moniker, the first element would be lacking.
If I wanted to phrase it in law-speak: the geocities post was designed to cause a reasonable person to believe that it was based in fact.
