I have been the subject of searches in their tests and have watched them train. My understanding is that the dog is never confused, its the handler that gets confused and can't read or misses the dogs signals.
There are procedures to establish finding a lost scent. If it was NL who was the searcher with her dog. I am aware of her and I trust the knowledge she has of her dog and the ability to search a scent and knows how to find a lost scent. If her dog didn't pick it up, which it appears she didn't. I would trust that there was no scent to recover at the point she stopped. Considering the age of the scent and amount of disturbance in the area it probably isn't a surprise that the dog lost the scent. Or it could be because Maura got a ride. Just like everything in this case, there is more than one possibility.
