Iīm afraid Maura was too. With her dad.
I can imagine Fred's reaction when he learned he was not the father of his wife's fifth child. I would think this could be quite a blow to a man's self esteem, ego, self image, etc. Maybe he turned to Maura for 'solace'.

After Atwood drove away, Faith Westman noticed the Saturn's interior lights switch on and off and witnessed a flurry of activity at the rear of the car, including a person standing at the trunk, according to private investigator John Smith, who spoke with the Westmans after the accident.

Looks to me like her whole goal was to get out of there quick and also wonder if she was really alone, like some insist.

LE did not DO ALL THEY COULD THAT NIGHT.
An alternative opinion might be: They did more than they should have, considering the fact that she told BA I'm fine, I don't need help, I don't want help, I have made my own arrangements, help is on the way.

They said they thought it was a man with Maura, both in her car and at the trunk. This is after BA left and before LE arrived.

What I don't get is that Virginia and John see someone walking around the car. But. And.....they see Butch pull up in his bus.
As you read, you see that Maura was alone in the car as quoted by Butch. Who was walking around the car?
Maybe he hid in the woods until BA left? Maura seemed anxious to get rid of BA.

Iīm not in anyway whatsoever blaming the SBD Butch Atwood, but I just canīt get my head around the various inconsistencies regarding how and in what fashion Atwood spoke with Maura at her car.
The various descriptions of their short conversation are diverging to a rather confusing extent.

What's to say that Maura was even going to her dads motel room that night? Liz D is the group leader according to James Renner. Fred told the group of girls not to talk. Maybe this is why Liz cannot recall who all was at the party Sat night?
But even to this day, I wonder if someone knew of a possible hook up after the party? Or that Maura would possibly be going to a friends place, but being as the accident was so close to the motel, everyone just assumes she did head for the motel.
Liz was not at the party...she went to Brown University, not UMass.
They were friends in High School and they met up now and then but not at Umass. They typically would meet in and around Hanson when both were on break from school.

Itīs seems Maura may have been pregnant. What if the father was Fred and the purpose of the trip to NH was to "take care" of the situation. Either Maura did not want an abortion and FM tried to convince her, or Maura was the one wanting an abortion and FM did not want her to have one. Horrible thought, and I hope this is not the case, but still a yucky possibility.

Not uncommon in witnesses if you do some research into witness psychology. Doesnīt necessarily mean they are consciously lying.

With the amount of questioning and time in between questioning by LE, PI's, family members, strangers, news reporters etc.etc. I'm surprised the poor man even remembered his own name.
He's never been a person of interest. Only a man that stopped to help a young woman that didn't want any help and was dragged thru the mud and accused for years for his effort. He stated he wished he never stopped that night. The man is dead so what is the sense of bringing him up again with the same things that have been gone over for nearly 7 years. Let him rest in peace for God's sake.

SBD was not the only Good Samaritan that night, NHSP Monahan was on his way home from work, heard the situation on his radio and stopped to help look for Maura. We all remember him as the NHSP police officer who stopped and had a brief conversation with Robinsordway. Shack, unbelievably, dared to hint that it was suspicious that Officer Monahan "turned up at the scene" and then she managed to imply that he was in some way involved in a conspiracy that resulted in the disappearance of Maura. Two men: both tired after a long, hard day's work, no doubt hoping to return to the warmth and comfort of their homes. Instead they stop to help, search (SBD joined the search, French Pond Road) for Maura. And this is the thanks they get from the Murray family supporters.

Yes. And wasn't the passenger side door wide open? I thought Faith said this, could be wrong.

After seeing the wine in plain view and red liquid in the car I think they most likely thought it was just another driver under the influence that left the scene to avoid a DWI. Since the car had MA plates they may have thought that person may have come from Mountain Lakes, where many out of staters have camps and second homes, and that the driver was headed back there for help.
There was no evidence of any crime taking place (except maybe an intoxicated driver leaving the scene of an accident) so in my opinion they did everything they should have that night by putting out a BOLO to all the responding units.
The LE also knew that the driver had just passed several houses and a store where they could have gone for help. JMO
I agree to a certain point, yes DUI drivers do disappear after an accident, and seeing the college decal only re-enforced this believe. BUT the spiderweb crack in the windshield on the drivers side should have been a BIG red flag. At that very point a person with a possible head injury should have taken into high consideration. Possible Concussion causing confusion or even amnesia or even a brain bleed.

I do feel though considering the limited resources in northern NH's small towns especially on a week night and with other calls coming in they likely did all they felt they could and like most cases the driver shows up the next day. BUT I still do not understand the lack of any real search east bound especially considering the windshield. I think they may have initiated the search using logic feeling the driver would go toward or stay near civilization and the crash site, or go to the Swiftwater store for a phone.

Problem is when people are trying to be evasive they don't always use a logical line of thinking, fear clouds sound judgement, and IF they have a head injury ANY logic can be thrown out. I am still in the camp of hypothermia considering she wasn't dressed for the weather, Butch Atwood stated she looked cold and shivering, she did have alcohol which lowers your defense against hypothermia, and she exerted herself going miles down the road. Who knows how much sleep she had in the past nights, she is obviously stressed and not thinking clearly, all combined its pretty much the perfect storm for hypothermia.

I know some have made a big deal about the rear window being slightly open, I believe it was the right rear. I feel there may be some reasoning behind the rear window being open. Consider the car smoked ( burned oil ) how sound was the exhaust, she could have opened it for fresh air.
Why the rear window, on a long highway trip I do that quite a bit to eliminate road noise from the front window. She may also have opened it because she was drinking or tired so the cold air would keep her alert.

Body shop employee stated that several police officers/detectives closely examined the Corolla shortly after the Hadley crash. It wasn't a cursory look-over.

Maybe it was broken?
