You really need to read the police report. The call came in for a car into a tree. It states that there were tire tracks in the snow. It also states....
Type of accident "Fixed object"
Fixed object struck "Tree"
Take it or leave it as this is the last I'll say about this. It's been gone over a million times already and if you want to believe that the accident happened somewhere else then that would be entirely up to you. I'll go with common sense and the report.
Has anyone specifically stated the car was touching a tree?or did anyone see marks on the tree?

I must have wrote funny or something.
Yes the police report stated: Fixed object struck "Tree".
If it struck the tree then I would think the car and the tree touched.

Wife and I were in Littleton last weekend at restaurant/Lounge and got into conversation with a man at the bar. He was weird and just gave me the creeps, anyway he made a comment to us that was something like this: I get a kick out of you people coming up here from the boonies to the big city. I bet you are scared that you might get knifed.
Wow, the folkes from the kitchen heard it and came right out and spoke to him and made sure that we were ok.It didn't really hit me till we got home that he might not have been kidding etc..
I don't think he was a lifetime local as we were trying to explain where Jackson nh was in our previous discussion. It did appear that he does live in littleton now.
I guess my thought are that we don't ever think a local would be involved and most are great great people, but the area can attract a rogue element because they feel they can blend into the countryside and not be noticed. They don't realize that the true local will recognize someone new or someone different to the area because everyone knows one another. In Lincoln Woodstock anyway. I know I was all over the place in this post but it was a very strange encounter.
OMG maybe that man in the bar was Det Columbo!

So maybe... A magnetic sign is placed on the "tow truck" door... Instant credibility with MM = no struggle. That's why she might have gotten in the truck. Except the driver bolts off and doesn't hook up the Saturn...
Revenge of the wobble doll heads -- a movie coming to theaters soon. Pass the popcorn.
It doesn't work like that in most of the areas I know of. Usually tow truck operators are dispatched by AAA or police and they have areas that they are assigned and where there is more than one tow company that works an area they run through a rotation.

So am I to believe that someone in a flatbed stole a young woman off of the road. No one saw it. I mean that is a pretty large piece of equipment. There usually records when that equipment is dispatched. And it was his idea to use that piece of equipment with a screaming female in the passenger side to leave the area? I am just trying to visualize the getaway.

Yep. I still don't know why no one is reading the officers excellent, detailed report. It's all in there. If someone needs to see it I can probably set it up so it can be reviewed. It was written by a trained observer, when the accident occurred. Not hours, not day, not weeks later. But at the time it occurred. It is very useful to read what someone who was on the scene at the time the accident occurred had to write. Its almost like hearing a trained professional dictate what he saw. Oh, wait a minute. It was a trained professional that wrote the report. No need to guess about what happened. What someone an hour or day or week thinks happened. There was a trained professional on scene that wrote it all down.

READ THE REPORT! She crashed into the trees causing damage to the vehicle, setting off the airbags which caused the damage to the windshield and damage to the hood. No trailer hitches, no cars dropped off by transferring flatbeds or UFO's or Maura lookalikes or convoys of vehicles to whisk Maura away from the staged scene. A simple drunk college student who didn't want to stick around for a DUI after crashing her car. What happened after she ran away, is anyone's guess. Occam can be your friend, if you will let him.

Columbo, One more thing
If she was coming from west to easton 112 , My opinion is that the car would have slid off to the right side same corner as the barn and not clip the left corner and then spin. Very interested in your view.
I wonder, did anyone witness the accident? Is it possible Maura had gone easterly on rt112 and then for some reason decided to turn around and was actually headed west when the accident happened?

Also is it possible she was impaired or had had a drink in her hand and over steered heading into the corner and drove not slid to the left side. We are assuming she slid out of control, but it could have been a controlled collision.

Thought I posted this before but I was so overcome with the giggles over the images of "abducted by wobble-head dolls" I must have been delirious.

Bill,

Not saying a flatbed truck was hovering overhead like a UFO.

Who might a smart, military-trained girl go with after she refused help from BA? Obviously someone who seemed credible. In urban areas there are different types of roadside service vehicles, not all are flatbeds or have hoists. Some operators only provide boost and diagnostic services. So if an urban girl breaks down on a country NH road and someone shows up with a sign on his truck and says I heard over the radio you broke down... my flatbed is out on another call... put your car in neutral and I'll tow you... but first get into the cab and get warm while I tend to the details.... If you'd had a few pops of wine and the police were en route this might seem like a wonderful solution. But then the perp just gets in the truck and takes off with MM leaving the Saturn behind.

Someone else here suggested this possibility and the fact that a tow operator who flashed a decal or fake ID would seem trustworthy. I think it's very plausible indeed...

look, we've had the experiences of "locals" in VT helping us out of a ditch or up a steep hill during the years when front-wheel drive and 4WD were not mainstream for weekend visitors. they'd use a chain or whatever.
so what?
there is no indication that she was abducted, that she went willingly with anyone, uniformed or un-uniformed, that she committed suicide or ran away.
NO ONE KNOWS how she disappeared, yet. that's a fact.
the only fact.
LE has more info than the general public, and she's still not been found.
do you have the patience to wait for a valid tip or clue? or is it more fun to let the mud fly from spinning wheels on a daily, and hourly, basis?
just sayin.

IMO Maura's car slid backwards in neutral down Old Peter's Rd with rag in place.

Within walking distance to WMNF jurisdiction.

This makes the least sense of all I've read so far. OPR is flat ground. How could her car have slid backwards?
And if it did like you think then how was it found beyond that on 112? IMHO it's impossible.

Snowy,

I was merely helping a fellow poster develop a picture of who an abductor might have been -- possibly posing as a tow operator. As for patience, I'm not able to always channel my inner Job, but one can always try their best. Feel free to continue attempting to sling scheisse my way in spirit of holiday giving.

I too await, with baited breath, much anticipated news about a possible clandestine rendezvous with a paramour and would be delighted if that information could come with a new name, a SSN or a licence plate number -- not more backstory from "sources close to".

But I too have my bets on Occam's razor. Where's Archer Mayor when we need him?

I still think it came from OPR, backwards. Maybe pushed hard enough to slide, to deploy airbags.

Witnesses saw it going backwards.

i think the waiting may be upwards of an additional 8-10-15-20 years before a random clue or physical evidence appears. a book will be published; perhaps some facts will be established.
Renner's research / discoveries are at least matched to verified sources, or they should be; otherwise, "research" becomes more pointless speculation and fiction.
i am not salivating over any "possible clandestine rendezvous"...and agree that any "new name" requires more than casual identification. one must be pretty certain before naming any individual to avoid libel.
while i am interested in what has become of MM, i don't find mystery and sleuthing to be generally entertaining pursuits as some do here...but more importantly, it's not productive when speculation is based on partial and misinformation. so be it.

I believe I have read more than once that the Westmans at the WB curve first heard an accelerating vehicle and then the sound of a bump or thump, presumably when Mauraīs Saturn hit the snowbank.
I donīt know what to make of that sequence of events, but am pretty sure that this is what the Westmans said they heard.
First an accelerating car, then the sound of a bump.

What's this about witnesses who saw the Saturn going backwards? Don't think I've seen anything about that before, can you tell us more?
