So, Columbo, in this scenario are you saying that Perp offered MM a tow with a rope or a chain that ended with the Saturn shearing off the north-side bank and crashing? Does he then tell MM he'll pop off and get his tow truck (or other items) and be right back to get her out of the snowbank in front of the M--ettes? BA comes along and then Perp shows up again?
Perp could have an AAA decal and that's why MM said she'd already "called" for help.
Wonder if LE checked the under side of the Saturn for finger prints? Isn't there a U-shaped steel rod so you can attach a chain to say... pull a car out of the ditch? Yes, he might have been wearing gloves, but maybe not? It wasn't a "stick your tongue to the metal fence" kind of night (by many accounts) so maybe he wasn't wearing any gloves?
If there were unidentified male gloves in the car, wonder if SAR dogs were utilized to track their owner?
Does anybody have any sense as to whether such a person (possible perp) might be still living in the area or even still alive?
Those mens gloves should have been checked for dna and compared to dna from Fred Murray and any male friends Maura had in Amherst.

Airbags wouldnīt have deployed if a car being towed bumped into the towing vehicle. Not enough force. Airbags donīt deploy that easily. You said yourself the Saturn would have been disabled by the rag in the tailpipe, so no motor running, not enough force.
The airbags might deploy if the Saturn was being rope/chain towed, missed the curve and careened into an ice-hardened snowbank.

If someone steering the Saturn wasn't familiar with the area and missed the turn and the rope/chain length was 10 feet it have worked out that way. Maybe Perp (truck driver) was going a little faster near WB because he knew it was populated and he didn't want to be seen?

Iīm certainly no car expert, but I still donīt believe airbags would have deployed in that situation. There is a reason they arenīt easily deployed: theyīre quite dangerous. When they deploy the person in front of them gets more or less injured by them, but usually less injured than from a head-on collision. No hard feelings if you prove me wrong!

Rag in the tailpipe....
It is possible that the Saturn was disabled with the rag in the tailpipe somewhere close by to the WB curve.
The person who put the rag in the tailpipe was close by as well.
This person then came to MM aid with the offer of a tow to his shop.
At the WB curve the truck towing MM vehicle turned the corner and the saturn being towed by a tow rope followed. Only they were too close to the inside corner and sheared off the bank with the tow strap.
It is at this point when the car came into contact with the back of the trucks bumper or tow hitch. This caused the airbags to deploy, the car to come unhooked and spin around in the road facing westbound.
The truck then left the scene and turned up BH Rd. a short distance. He lives just up the road about 2 miles so He knows the area well as well as LE response time. Plus the fact that He has a scanner.
Maura grabs the stuff she needs from the car and talks to Butch for about 2 to 3 min. at the most. She then walks the short distance from the front area of the Marrottes front lawn by thier trees to the intersection of Rte. 112 and BH Rd.
Maura gets into the truck with this man and goes the couple miles up the road to this guys secluded home in the woods.
Maura has not been seen since Butch Atwood talked to her or whomever it was at the car.
Det Columbo,

I interpret your post as if you actually know the name of the person who according to you lives a few miles up BHR and who you consider a person of interest in this context.
Am I correct about this?
Thanks.

Frostman,

Your scenario could well make sense, as the Westmans apparently heard an acceleration followed by a thumping sound.
Could possibly have been a tow-truck accelerating coming out of the curve, followed by the Saturn breaking loose and hitting the snowbank.

Det Columbo,

Another question for you.
Did your "person of interest" on BH Road own a red truck at the time of Mauraīs vanishing?
Thanks.

I'm no car expert. If my car makes an unusual noise I just turn up the radio!

But--- what if the chain/rope broke and it was sort of like the "crack the whip" game we play on ice skates and they did deploy. Wham!

Perp. says he'll just pop home for another chain or a different truck or sone salt or a shovel. MM says she doesn't want to leave the car. Perp says he'll be right back and tells her to NOT go with anyone else. By the time he gets back MM is shivering and he says "hop in, get warm, I'll hook up the car". Then he gets in and takes off with her leaving the Saturn?

Or... maybe the perp. who was chain/rope towing MM in the Saturn deliberately went a little fast around the corner in order to crash her car so she's have to go with him???

That might be the acceleration that was heard...

Anyone can slip on a set of MA plates... NH veterans plates, dealer plates and LE are red white and blue -- different colour lettering (NH = blue and MA = red) but maybe the little plate light was out? Possibly to RO it didn't look like a NH, VT or ME plate which one (a local New Englander) could probably discern even in the dark -- the red white and blue made Massachusetts the obvious choice to RO?

Maybe commercial vehicle plates in NH have a variety of colour options?

Some people collect license plates...

oten wonder if RO knew for sure the license plate she had seen on the red truck was from Mass. Or could it be possible that she assumed by the color of the plate that it was from Mass. NH had red and white temporary license plates in Feb. 04

Not sure if this would be similar to the temporary NH plates in 2004. It strikes me that RO was the type of person who if she didn't know something for certain would say so. The lettering on the NH temp is different methinks.

Regarding James Rennerīs new post today featuring his interview with former Lt Scarinza of the NH State Police, I found it interesting that Mr Scarinza himself finds it amazing that Maura wasnīt arrested or in any way "punished" when she crashed her
fatherīs Toyota Corolla in Amherst, MA.

Another thing concerning this nocturnal drive:
Apparently Maura left the party she was attending at around 2.30 a.m. but suffered the car crash at around 3.30 a.m. despite the very close distance between her dorm and the location of the accident. Still it took a full hour from her departure from the party until she had the car crash less than two miles away.
Did she perhaps go somewhere else in the meantime?

According to Beagle local LE apparently took an inordinate interest in searching and checking out the smashed Corolla at a local body shop.
Why was that so?

Ideas anyone?

Maura has not been seen since Butch Atwood talked to her or whomever it was at the car.
This is just your theory/opinion right?
I'm wondering how possibley this all took place and no one saw or heard it. One person was at their window peeling an orange and another looked out when they heard noise of the car hitting the bank. Maybe this truck was invisible??
Oh, the person you're talking about in the secluded house doesn't live on BHR and if he brought a kicking screaming girl home or even an unconscious one there's no doubt in my mind that his wife would be just a bit upset with him.
Question... wouldn't the car or tow truck had to have been on the bank in order for the strap to be also on the bank with enough tension to shear off the bank?(I highly doubt a strap can shear off a bank)
IMO it makes absolutely no sense.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the new game today of "Let's blame a local" AGAIN.
IMHO it sounds to me like Fred knows exactly why she came up here and knowing that, he feared from the start that she wanted to commit suicide. It seems he was uncooperative right from the first phone call to him by LE. The big question is why???

About 4 yrs. ago My friend who owns a business in Littleton was backing his volvo wagon up at approx. 10 MPH to the dock area where He was gonna pressure wash it. Upon doing so He rammed into the wall with the rear bumper of the vehicle.

This deployed all the airbags in his car to the tune of $1400.00 replacement costs.

So....YES it can happen even at slow speeds. If being towed at approx. 20 to 30 MPH and coming into contact with the towing vehicle it is VERY POSSIBLE.

Once this happened at the corner Maura as well as the person towing new that had a problem. The truck driver then convinced Maura it would just be best to get out of there.

And YES a tow strap or chain could shear off the bank. I certainly wouldn't want to be in the path of either cause it would probably kill You or come close.

Think people....

Wowzer....is there only one person who owns a red truck on BH rd. 116.? I never said the truck was red in this post either. Thank You

She was adamant that it was MA plates and stated it more than once.
