I mean, wouldn't any self respecting halfway competent serial killer be able to make the skull appear ON the anniversary, not just near it?

It's probably not Maura. Girls that have gone missing closer to where it was found would be my guess. Strangely though on the google maps when you look at the distance between Haverhill and Danby you can see how close Londenderry is. Which made me think of the ping.

However, in one of the news videos released on one of the NH channels (sorry, can´t recall which one right now), the reporter mentioned that she had been speaking with local people, who pointed out that Danby Hill Road´s relatively high elevation makes it unlikely that floods (such as storm Irene) could have dislodged the skull from the nearby cemetery. It was also mentioned (in this news video) that a cursory examination of the nearby cemetery apparently showed no indication of any kind of digging activity.
The fact that the skull showed signs of a head trauma - indicating possible foul play - also needs to be considered in this context, IMO.
