If she meant to go into hiding when she left Amherst I believe it had to do with her having somehow messed up on her probation (Vasi? something else?) and she was facing jail time, or at least believed right or wrong that she was.

Private Investigators looked into this and in the evenings Route 112 gets a fair amount of traffic. Its a Catch 22 - Either she disappeared in front of Butch Atwood's driveway and he is not saying who picked her up or she did head eastward but other cars aside from Rick Forcier did not see her. None of this makes any sense either way. This is by far the most baffling disappearance I have read about but I think that is why it is getting so much attention.

It is baffling indeed. I originally suspected that they had reason to believe she went west, since the people who did the hasty search that night supposedly only searched west. People here have even disputed whether the dog would have been able to accurately track her scent after so much time, using a glove she rarely wore. So I give up trying to make sense out of the east/west thing. LOL. Too many possibilities and conflicting information, and we just don't know. I read about a lot of missing persons cases, and this one is certainly strange. I think the Disappeared program and Renner's blog have sparked a lot of the recent interest and has drawn many of us here.

This was in response to Det Columbo repeated inquiries/statements as to why they only searched west. Something that I don't even know is accurate. I was speculating on if they only searched west, why the may have done so.
The dog also, only the handler can say for sure. But, if the glove was touched by Maura the dog would have the scent. But again, air scent dogs track scent that is on the air. And the wind would likely be either east-west on the road. Air scent dogs follow exactly that. Scent of the person on the air not actually the person.
