One victim was chatting away on his cellphone when he stopped talking, the phone seemed muffled and distanced from him, and the person on the line heard him say something like, oh no, help.

Not trying to argue or prove anything. It's just that in cases where one set of prints were found, they were not matched to victims size shoe and tread. A clever "killer" might carry a person, drop him in the water and walk along the rocks from there.

For every paper that challenges these drownings, there are more that fit in with a real posiblity that a person was taken. A phone goes dead....not only has it been shut off in the middle of a call, but the GPS goes cold too. I'm guessing the battery is taken out at that point.

I would like to think people would not do this to another human being, but you never know.

I hope this case is solved soon. This has been too long. Someone knows. That is the sad part. Roz/Beagle's post about made me think of witness protection - going back to west point - that was the year of all the rapes.......... that was my first gut instinct on this case. I just dont know
I would think that if this were the case, witness protection, the police in MA and NH would make statements that would help keep people from wrecklessly bashing anyone from UMASS to NH where her car was found. Maybe put out a story that she has been presumed dead by her own doing....something. It's frustrating to be sure.

On that note, saying her backpack and a shoe or something had been found in the white mountains might lead a stalker to believe she did go off somewhere and is no longer alive.

I'll always feel bad about those baited MMM forums. And I agree with you Bill, in that the emotions of loved ones, they will follow any bouncing ball to find their loved ones....sometimes knocking people down along the way.

just me... the back pack or shoe brings me back to NOT having a confirmation of what she was wearing or HOW she was wearing her hair............. the atm video. there is a reason the police keep that private.............. and why the family does as well. its all mind boggeling.. why so much is not considered important makes me think .. they know more about what happened..

I have only cursorily been following this forum as of late, but can´t help reflecting upon the seemingly huge difference between Maura´s disappearance and the recent vanishing of an Indiana State University student as regards the way these two cases are being handled by LE.
The LE authorities handling the Indiana case have over the last few days been releasing a considerable amount of information about the police work in question and are actually using the media in a pro-active fashion.
Contrast this with the almost unbelievable lack of information and any kind of progress reports pertaining to Maura´s case, currently +7 years old.
For some reason the Maura Murray case seems to be handled quite differently than most other similar kinds of disappearances.
Now, what on earth could the reason be for this?
Any ideas?

Best practices and standardized procedures are known to change significantly as time goes on in a lot of areas---I'm sure what's considered a Best Practice in law enforcement also changes. I know in Emergency Management it has changed significantly.

I'm not so sure the police have "let" the family look at the ATM picture. Up until 2007 when the MMM forum was still going, the ones handling the site said no to that. Maybe that changed?
When I say bouncing ball, I think of the footprints the M-attes found in their yard the night of the vanishing woman. Thanks to people close to the case (you know who you are), we were told about them. It didn't make the news. Anyhow, Fred kept looking in places like this (back yards) and people didn't like it so much after awhile. I'm all for letting this man have his daughters computer back.....who would it hurt? Who would it point to, maybe nobody....no idea. BUT, the laptop was in her DORM room. UMASS made a copy and NH made a copy, and I vote to give it back now.
IT WASN"T IN THE CAR!!!!!!!!And It might help! Maybe cold case workers should try to court order a copy of the harddrive, what's the problem with this?

It is always based upon circumstance. What was there to release about Maura? No direction of travel, no known destination, no type of vehicle used. A BOLO was issued so if her or any of her identification ever has contact with any agency the police will know about it. Searches were done immediately after the crash and then more later. In this case what more could have been done? This particular case appeared like hundreds of other evading cases and still does.

Some of what you write I don't remember. I don't remember hearing about the prints in the backyard or if that was speculation. And I didn't know she had a laptop. If she did the authorities likely would have made an image of that drive also and examined it. I know they searched a computer, maybe more than one. I know they found some searches she did for what appears to be someone looking to go to Vermont. I don't know if it was a laptop or not.

Bill,
I clearly remember having read somewhere that Mr M-tte apparently found some kind of foot marks in the snow in his backyard the day after Maura´s disappearance. It must have been mentioned on one of the forums.
I also distinctly remember reading somewhere else on the web that search dogs at some point indicated some supposed trace of Maura in the immediate vicinity of Old Peters Road, apparently not very far from the intersection of Rte 112 and Old Peters Road.
Speaking of Old Peters Road I recently watched a fairly new YouTube video of Maura´s supposed drive from Rte 302 via Swiftwater Village to the Weathered Barn curve. This video was shot in the midst of winter and clearly showed Old Peters Road as having been cleared of snow.
I always imagined that this very minor, dead-end
road was left packed with snow over the winter, but apparently not so.
If this was also the case in February 2004 a person or a car could easily have gone down Old Peters Road without being hindered by huge snow packs.

Old Peters Road is fully accessible during the winter and the winter that Maura disappeared, there was very little snow on the ground. We looked at our house that week as well as several other sin that area...I remember it very clearly--we had stayed at a house on White Mountain Road for the week. In fact, during that particular day, it had actually wamred up a little after having been bitterly cold for several weeks. There was definitely not new snow, and the snow that was on the ground was rather crunchy.

I clearly remember people talking about it. What I don't ever remember hearing is if these footprints were actually verified by reliable people as even being human or far more importantly whether they had anything at all to do with Maura.

And as a footnote, there has been lots of things that have been speculated on, thought about, thrown against the wall and just plain made up. Some of it was talked about over and over to the point were some people considered it to be the truth. Often it was not. There were a couple of people on this forum that would say something and then when they heard someone else repeat it, they would insist that it was "verified" from another "source".

Not really the way to run an "investigation" or even a circus to be honest.

We think that the family wasn't allowed to look at the picture because that's what we were told. We have no way of knowing that this is true.
The yard with the supposed footprints is where the car landed. If there were people prints going into the snow I'm sure they would have been noticed, followed and mentioned.
There are a couple of people here that claim to be locals. They should know the answer to the footprints mystery. They only have to drive by in Jan or Feb and there is usually lots of prints going thru that yard. Deer and a moose or two mostly. From a distance (window) it would be very hard to tell a person print from a moose print. I know this from experience as more than once I thought someone had walked through my back yard when in fact it had been a moose.
So to the couple of people here that claim they are familiar with the area I say to you to get your thermals on this coming winter and drive by and see the many prints in that area.

If there has been any truth at all in these forums (and that's questionable) it's been buried long ago in the lies, rumours and speculations. Buried so deep that I doubt we would reconize it if it jumped out and bit us in the butt. JMO

I remember when I heard about the "footprints" thinking that many people have never actually looked at footprints and in particular watched how they age. My first thought was they were deer or most likely moose prints but no one to my knowledge ever verified what they were. Like you said, they can have a somewhat human appearance to the casual observer especially when aged and not closely examined. In particular by people who don't know what they are looking at.
