Ridiculous -
in the context of Wowzer's observations with regard to how her neighbors and community have been treated relative to MM's disappearance, ten years and counting, as well as the torment SBD has endured, before and after his death, and ongoing today, i trust that her caution in approaching a stranger in her immediate physical area to converse or assist is well taken.
i trust, also, that she would favor kindness, caring and appropriate assistance, but the extent to which she might engage herself or family, or at what level she may put herself at risk, is entirely her call.
there is not "always" or "never"; she will make her best judgment at a particular time under a certain circumstances. we are, after all, shaped by our experiences.
it's a shame that the MM saga evolved from a witch hunt for a dirtbag; never proven that he/she exists.

Excellent post Snowy. I couldn't have said it any better myself.
I will add though that if I see someone broken down that I don't know I will try my best to get them help by calling the police but I no longer stop, offer a ride or physically help as I used to.

Thanks. I don't know of anyone in the area that lives off the grid although with the prices of everything going up I wish I was off the grid.

A while back there was a poster pushing the hermit off the grid thing. I wonder if it is the same person.

My previous comment was certainly not intended as a critique of Wowzer's statement. In fact, the point concerning the "flaying" of BA is that it's only natural that people will reconsider helping others when this is the likely response you will get!
I encourage my wife to simply call for help from her vehicle, whether she has the kids with her or not. Cell phones have made this dilemma much easier to resolve from a safety stand point, but, as in Maura's case, there are still areas that have little to no service. I myself am much more cautious when my children are with me, but, at the end of the day., I want to teach my children what my mom taught me. As I explained to Findy about a year ago, my boys are very aware of their surroundings and they are not naive. If helping someone is calling a tow truck or a cop or a family member from the safety of a locked car, Bravo, you are still helping.

Being a first responder on a local fire department for over a decade. We are taught scene safety first and foremost. Nothing gets better by making more victims. While I almost always stop when alone, I always use my vehicle to protect me from oncoming traffic when I stop. Flashers/strobes running. Saying that, I almost never stop with my wife or when my kids were in the vehicle. Sorry but I can't use my vehicle to protect myself with my family in it. I have stopped once at a bad accident when I was able to get my vehicle off the road far enough to feel my wife was safe. That leaves me unprotected. I really recommend that most people call on their cell. That is probably the best thing that you can do to help and give dispatch as much information as you can. How many victims you can see, if they are moving/screaming. I know it sounds not too compassionate but screaming victims are living victims with fully intact vital functions.(airway, breathing, circulation) It's the ones not moving or saying anything that you have to check first. I will also mention that there are many unseen dangers at accidents that people don't think about. Newer vehicles have airbags located all over the car. All airbags have explosives that can go off without warning after an accident. You can watch several firefighter on youtube being injured by them if you look. There is also tremendous amounts of electrical current in the hybrid cars, can kill you in a heartbeat. Struts are also located all over the cars and can if they overheat shoot like a bullet. We had a firefighter have a strut shoot through his leg causing a very bad injury. Another had both legs broken by the struts on the bumper let go and hit his legs. Again, this isn't all inclusive but just a warning that there are many dangers to be aware of. Broken power poles with downed lines are another tremendous danger. I was almost killed because even though I knew a pole was down. The car was far off the road and I jumped over a guard rail several times before realizing that the power-lines had fallen on the guard rail a couple of hundred feet further up. You should also be aware of an accident I saw where a 65,000 pound, lime green, engine tank, protecting the scene of an accident was hit hard enough that they moved it three feet. They said, "they didn't see it". I have also seen people race down the emergency lane of an interstate that was closed because we were landing a helicopter. They apparently were much more important then everyone else who stopped. Fortunately they were stopped by the state police before there was a bigger problem. Seriously, be careful.

And my comments weren't actually directed to Rid. He already has the right idea from what I see. It was more of an agreement, with some supporting prose.

Again, there are idiots out there that equate self-sufficiency with some type of evil mindset. Just like putting up a no trespassing sign. Matthew seems to be one of those.

And yes, I would love to not pay the power company for my electricity, or heat with solar, etc. I guess that makes me shady/evil/suspect also.

There is so much wrong with what he said that I'm not going through it again.

And no, he is not a "professional" he was a volunteer. I have been to several accidents as a volunteer in my days also. And he should stick to tv repair because mechanics is not his forte.

If, big IF, she sheared off the corner how does that change 1.The police report? 2. What happened after the crash? So the questions are, is it correct, and how did it change what happened?

Minimize Harm

Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.

Journalists should:

*Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
*Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.
*Recognize that gathering or reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance.
*Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone's privacy.
*Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.
*Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes.
*Be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the filing of charges.
*Balance a criminal suspect's fair trial rights with the public's right to be informed.
