Why did Mark Ruddock of the Hadley MA Police Department let Maura Murray leave the Corolla crash scene unarrested?

What if she appeared sober at the crash site? What if she told the officer that she skidded on sand? What if he believed that she had been on her way to return the car?

Not everything is some grand conspiracy.

I want to point something out. I noted this in a discussion of one of the ten year anniversary videos. The charging document that charged Maura with credit card fraud is no longer on file at the district court. This is public information, Beagle, and you can go to the courthouse yourself. As you point out, she wasn't arrested following the Corolla accident. There is nothing to suggest that she was involved in the hit and run. So why would she be in hiding?

As far as I can tell, if she's alive, which I strongly doubt, she could come home now, without fear that criminal consequences would follow her return. She could probably make a few bucks, too. No offense to James, but I would rather read Maura's book than his.

The idea that she might be alive, with some logical reason to stay in hiding, is simply nonsense.

OUI.

Scarinza questioned why Maura was not arrested for OUI.

Fred said Maura was lucky she did not get arrested for OUI.

Robert C. Stevens, the first PI on the case, said Ruddock could have arrested her for OUI.

Maura was 21 years old.

She was driving from SW, the most popular Massachusetts drinking spot west of Boston.

Crash happened apx 3:00 am late Saturday night, the most popular drinking night at UMass.

She had been drinking earlier the same night.

There is no excuse for running that stop sign unless you have never taken that route before. Go through the intersection once, and you won't forget it.

Her family has a history of alcohol abuse.

She crashed a car by taking the corner too wide, which is one of the most common indications of drunk driving.

There was a fair amount of alcohol found in the Saturn less than two days later.

There are no circumstances under which, nor any time at which, Maura Murray was more likely to have been drunk.

Of course we are free to read your blog. That doesn't address my questions. By the way, I checked out the State Sanitary Code (which is online). I would check that out if I were you. Your landlord is required to maintain certain areas of the building. It would be better to tell him or her about this obligation than to drag poor Melissa into this, in my opinion.

OK. Assuming that Ruddock could have arrested her for OUI, what is the significance of that fact? What, if anything, is the connection between Ruddock's hypothetical failure and Maura's disappearance?

Not to mention that over four years later my backyard was lightly vandalized only hours after I mentioned on Topix an item of interest about the Corolla crash.

It could certainly be a discreet event, not connected to Maura's disappearance, but it is highly unusual; therefore, worth a look.

If Renner asked Ruddock why Ruddock did not arrest Maura at the Corolla crash scene, Ruddock could simply have answered Renner by saying that Maura wasn't drunk. Instead, Ruddock evaded Renner's very sensible question.

Fair enough.

Getting back to the subject of credit card fraud, if you ever should find yourself near the district court, I think that it would be worth a stop to the criminal clerk's office. The idea that Maura is in hiding is largely premised on the assumption that she might be avoiding the criminal consequences of her actions. If you determine that there are no pending charges, I would think, you could invalidate that theory.

When I first Renner's post, I heard the question, in my head, as being a Rhetorical one. He might have thought: "who is he to tell me how to do my job?"
