One more reference to multiple witnesses talking to Maura at the accident scene:
WITNESSES told police she did not seem badly hurt and asked THEM to call a wrecker, not 911. When ONE OF THE WITNESS went to a nearby house to call police, anyway, she disappeared.(The Champlain Channel, Feb 20, 2004)
So it implies there is more than one witness at the scene of car. Is this just a case of using the wrong wording or is there a reason they no longer want people to know about another witness at the scene? I remember the story of the lady calling a tow truck for Maura. Perhaps this is the case and they don't want it out in the open for whatever reason? Just my thoughts

From the same article "That morning, she e-mailed her professors at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to tell them she would be gone for a week to take care of a family problem."
Seems to me that the author just wasn't very familiar with the case.
Could be the case, she e-mailed at 4pm according to other articles, not in the morning.

I was just thinking... LE really want you to think she left on her own and was upset... one of the kids that took their own life recently.. it was in the article that they didn't realize how final suicide was - they had put their cell phone on the charger and did some other mundane things before they hung themselfs.. sad.. cant imagine. breaks my heart. I do NOT think Maura committed suicide.
however,.. maybe just maybe some of the belief in her PRE planning was just going thru the motions
Driving a car three hours into the mountains on a cold winter night in a car that was unreliable sounds anything but mundane to me.

please read the post again. mundane was directly in reference to teen suicides and the finality of the act. The mundane act was charging a cell phone before you kill yourself. as in.. why charge it. you certainly wont be making any calls.

Oh, so she did go back to her dorm then, in order to send the email at 4pm, be seen leaving campus and check her cell messages before she hit the road? Billy is quoted as saying he knew that her last or second to the last call was to her dorm room.~~To see if he had called. Evidently he didn't. She didn't feel like talking to much of anyone and yet later she leaves a message that she does want to talk, and he thinks she was checking to see if he did call. Maybe he didn't know this until later, so I'm not picking on him here (if ever), rather I'm getting more of a feeling for the timeline, what might be going on in her mind. Later Sunday after work,(if she even went to work),(I know, I know, that Sara says Maura seemed ok and didn't mention the latenight crash) she spoke with Billy and then her sister. Kathleen says Maura was fighting with Billy at that point.(but doesn't word it that way for 2 years for an article)Again, just trying to get more of a feeling for her state of mind.
She does not want to talk. Then she does want to talk. She promises to call later on and has either downloaded the insurance forums or is about to pick them up.....with the intention of talking to her dad around 11pm, and Billy too. She thinks she is going to be somewhere and needed money for something to boot. Police say there was enough food in the car to suggest she was going to be away for more than a few days.(pretty sure this is correct), and maybe she's been drinking. The drive takes 3 hours they say so she had to have checked her messages before starting out.(at least I think so)

Backing up now to Thursday.(sorry Snowy):

Oh hell, I'm so upset, I'm going back to my dorm now. I'll say I have a roommate and agree to have donuts in the morning.
FRIDAY IS A BLANK
But Saturday, boy did I have fun. Looking at cars, picking one out even, going to the brew pub and then to the dorm party. They didn't want me to leave at 2:30 so I said I was going back to my dorm. I may have but still, I hit the dang guardrails at 3:30 and got a ride from there to the motel. I had to use Dads cellphone at 4:30 to call Billy and dangit he KNOWS something ELSE is going on with me. It's bad enough that I let my father down, but there is more. I can't go there yet....
It's Sunday and dad got a rental, he's heading back to CT, no car for me %^&@ and I need one for tomorrow.
MONDAY. No classes because of snow? What did I do all day? Who saw me besides the one who thought it was me leaving campus?
Did I look up directions to Burlington? Why didn't anyone go to Sara when they found I was missing? Why did some of my friends come looking for me, calling security.....before my car was even discovered in NH?

Well, the freedom of information act was denied because it could intimidate witnesses and so on, so I think some accounts/testimonies had to be ommited for good police work and to protect anyone else who may have come forward. Maybe they were afraid. Mrs. W-Man said Maura was in her car for 5 minutes before SBD came along, and then she stopped looking.(at least for a spell) For him to be quoted as saying that he could see her behind the airbag was surely a mistake. No matter what though, he still maintained that it didn't look like her because her hair was down, and longer.

On the first forum - did they say if she had a card for food? did she eat at the cafeteria on Monday?

the simple secrets i just dont get. this must have driven LE crazy if they were as tight lipped with them.. I could see how they would say.. nada - info only flowed one way..

I never heard fred say.. dang it i knew something was wrong when i didn't hear from her.

did she have a habit of saying i will call and didn't ? the car was important? what happened?

paris.. good post.

I just saw this in Marybeth conways article. I missed it before.

THIS IS NOT TRUE..........

It was later reported that Maura's credit cards, ATM card and cell phone had not been used since Monday. The location of Maura's cell phone could not be traced using GPS technology, possibly due to poor cell phone coverage or a dead battery.

OH.. it is true - that they could not search where it was at that time if off or low coverage - but they still could have gotten route info from pinging and handoffs.

i just feel sick......... I wish I knew was this a simple case of getting the wrong person on the phone at the phone company..........

this is so not true especially since she was ROAMING.

hopefully mauras case brought light to the cases that are reported today. this capabilty has been available since 98 or so.. tragic.

well actually it IS TRUE who its worded.. the current location of her phone could not be found.

however the gps functionality of the network and her handset would have provided route/handoff/pinging info.

I have never been asked about this.. I am curious if her phone was turned off after she made her last known call to voicemail. If this is the case... IT IS STILL WORTH looking into.... to see did she travel in that area in the past months etc. where did she go ?

that could answer why this info has never been discussed. my gut is the handset was turned off so that is why new info has never been discussed publicly.....

my guess from looking and seeing back to 2004.. her last transmission is either at 430 or around 600 - for 04 sprint network. nothing past 630 for sure. not on a sprint handset.... 630 is stretching it if traveling the speed limit when I mapquest it.

"Fred Murray said his daughter was due to talk to him Monday night, but he thinks she was unable to. Fred Murray said she is very dependable and follows through with what she says she will do." (The Champlain Channel, Feb 17, 2004)

I too find it very odd he didnīt react when she failed to call him Monday night (at 8 pm IIRC). Itīs also odd her friends at school were not only looking for her but were worried enough to call security when they couldnīt find her Monday, way before she officially disappeared. I believe we have not been told the whole story about the circumstances of her leaving Amherst.

We haven't Hannah, nor have we been told the truth about Maura leaving West Point....
What is the big damn deal?
Granted I know none of us want to see our loved ones in a bad light....

But bad light be damned if my daughter was missing....I would do/tell anything to get her found.
That isn't a dig necessarily at Fred....I say my daughter because I have one of those but I dont have a sister, etc....

It's Sunday evening, 7 PM on February 8, 2004. The 21-year-old nursing student, Maura Murray, is dropped off by her father at her dorm at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Little does he know just 24 hours later, his daughter will disappear.

What? Is this a misprint, because I've never read that Maura was dropped off so late in the day. The story was that she was dropped off and then went to work. ATTENTION: someone please correct me or verify.....

Just me, I think this is a misprint, as Maura was dropped off about noon, and later went to work that afternoon at the art gallery were she was working, but hey, what do I know, someone correct me if I'm wrong...,which I'm certain will happen.

without background info provided to us about her amherst college and social experiences that likely impacted her fleeing on the day she disappeared, and by sifting through the info, misinfo, and partial truths via the discussions here...
my perception is that she might be harbored in safety from her previous life, or less likely, because her body has not been found, that she may have committed suicide.
i suppose family members would have worked really, really, really hard to uncover her relationships and circumstances at UMASS as clues to her disappearance. if they did, then they would have a sense about why she left amherst.
that part, a key part, would be less of a mystery.
the amateurish finger-pointing to community members, which returns from time to time, is a smokescreen either for what is known and hidden, or for wishful thinking.
just my opinion.

well said.. maybe its best to let her be. Fred is not seeking media media - obvoiusly - took him 4 months to talk to marybeth conway - and she is from hanson... he just wants police info. so.... i dont know. I am torn.. scarina with folded hands is very guarded with what he will say and wont.. he emphasises that she had stresses in her personal life. since even where the liquor store was located to get a last eye witness account was left out.. that tells me - they know why she was upset - it is damaging in THEIR view - therefor - none of anyone business.

I dont have a daughter but I do have a sister... and as you all know i would walk thru fire for. I quit my job of 11 years to fight for justice for my brother inlaw with halliburton.. I lost. I had no idea what i was getting myself into and it was damn scary. I will never put a toe in the state of Wyoming again...... EVER. But we didn't care - we told everything about darrin.. everything.. and anything - his full medical records the works. we wanted answers..

i hope maura is at peace.

Scarinzas part bothers me..

" at some point UMMMMMMMM we may get a piec of evidence which says UMMMM that she was a victim of acrime. aaaaand and solving that case we want to be able to have everthing that you have done from the begining up to that point forward UMMMMM admissble in court :IF" you have to go to trial.

Interesting.. others have pointed out Fred's use of um and inflection.. but.. I don't like this.. at all. I didn't notice it before.. but the ummmmmmmmmmmm and how do you get from 75% to conviction to IF you HAVE to go to trial

IF????????? and why HAVE TO?

would like others feedback on this.

COPS usually say - when this goes to trial.. not IF and HAVE TO. of course you should HAVE to unless...THE HOPEFULL HEAR .. she is ok.
