Chief Williams told me that the first official on the scene was Sergeant Cecil Smith at about 7:30 that evening of February 9th. When Sergeant smith pulled up to the scene, Ms. Murray was gone, but had been observed about three minutes earlier by witnesses at or near the scene. North Country News 2/27/04

At about 7 that night, while taking a sharp turn on Wild Ammonoosuc Road in Woodsville, N.H., Murray lost control and slammed into a snow bank. Boston Globe 2/15/04

Around 7 p.m. that evening she crashed her car into a snowbank on Route 112 in New Hampshire several miles from the Vermont border. Police say a witness offered help, but that Murray refused and told the witness not to call police. Portsmouth Herald 2/17/04

**********

7:30 to 7:46 = 16 minutes.

7 PM accident time.

Hit Snowbank.....NO TREES.

Maura crossed 2 state lines when She came to NH. IF She was taken at the scene is it not possible that She could have been taken back across state lines. Hence.....WHY was The FBI not consulted from the beginning.

NO FBI....once they figured She WAS MISSING...Why.?

Boston Globe:

At 3:40 p.m. Monday, she withdrew $280 from an area ATM, then stopped at a liquor store. Surveillance cameras at the bank machine and in the store show that she was alone.

Maura was next seen at 7 p.m. in the White Mountains hamlet of Haverhill, N.H., an area where she had hiked and camped with her father.

Schoolbus driver Butch Atwood came across her car in an embankment, he said, and stopped to ask if she needed help.

Det.Columbo..a question..If it couldn't or shouldn't be answered on public forum..no problem..
When calling in FBI was suggested by..? whoever..was it denied by LE? Also, wasn't the suggestion or offer of AMW also denied..? As I recall there were "jurisdiction" problems..?
I am fully aware you are working to help family. TX

I'll try to help here. I recall CS saying it took him10-20 minutes to get to the scene of the crash. That's vague, right?
At first a W-Man thought they not only saw a person smoking, but that it was a man smoking.
Somehow CS already knew about that rag stuffed up there. He went to the W-Mans, so many, many family and forumers have stated such. Not to forget the newspeople, they reported this too.
But you're right Jenkins. When Maura's family went in, CS and others said they thought that Fred had been driving and just left his car like that to go snowmobiling like many others have done.
Makes little sense. They were already worried about the windshield and a possible head injury. Already had heard from Barbara that she had no idea where the girl was. Maybe conflicting reports between the two separate callers? One saying "girl", the other saying man. Because it did say so in the logs.
A side note. Just prior to all this people were stopped for operating their snowmobile with the headlights OFF. The passenger,(Maura)? had no helmet on, the driver got a citation. Just wondering out loud here if that could be one way to get away, hop on a snowmobile and drive off with the lights dim.
Problem is, someone was seen at the trunk of the car and even though some say it was too far for the W-Mns to see, it's believed that a woman, and Maura to be exact, was at the trunk of her car 1-2 minutes b4 police came driving up. Supposedly too is that the woman of that house said" She was just there 1-2 minutes b4 you pulled up", so I tend to think CS really did go to the first callers house, first.
It took Butch 10-15 minutes I thought to get through as all lines were busy. His x wife had to take the call because he was out on his bus doing paperwork and waiting to talk with the officer. I know he helped look for Maura, even going to a nearby coffee house. Funny they might think she could hoof it that far in such a small timeframe.
Just me--paris"CS and others said they thought that Fred had been driving and just left his car like that to go snowmobiling like many others have done." Not sure where you are getting your info from but this is not true.

No family has ever seen a video. There was a subpena for the ATM video in the court papers. LE has stated that they have a reciept from the liqour store. To my knowledge no one has ever seen this reciept either.

Murray's family said Smith told them he thought the driver of the Saturn was Murray's father, to whom the car was
registered. Mysterious to them, though, is why Smith asked neighbors, the night of the crash, "Where is the girl?"

Columbo this was a post by you 6 months ago saying the call was 7:05 pm not 7:03 pm. Just bringing it to your attention as minutes seem important to you. Still waiting for the surprise and the NEW LIGHT. Are you any closer? Just wondering when this light will come on.
Months and months of talking about a second accident and still not a bit of proof that it ever happened.

The 7:05 scanner call is being looked into at this time. It will show that Maura had a slight accident on Swiftwater rd. It will also bring to light the 7:29 call of an accident at the Weathered Barn corner on Rte.112.
What I have learned recently after 7 1/2 yrs. of investigating this case will bring a whole NEW LIGHT to this mysterious case.
The answers will surprise some but not most.

So I am supposed to believe it now? That would be like me taking their article that says, and I quote: "At the time she left Amherst, relatives said, Murray had been upset that she had crashed her father's car two days earlier. Before heading north toward the White Mountains, Murray withdrew a few hundred dollars from an ATM machine, packed her cellphone wall charger and her favorite stuffed monkey into her Saturn, and e-mailed her professors to tell them she would not be in class all week because of a "family problem."
....and saying they must not know what they are talking about. They probably have five other articles that say she went missing at 7:30, like most articles do. How do they know? That's what I want to know.
Brilliant Brian, This is a difficult timeline to nail, creating a difficult problem for LE. I inadvertantly stated the 7pm search for maura via my scanner recollection. I was quite shocked this held any importance. I had a friend living on Bradley Hill Road that was late getting home from work and was worried. She had moved from Florida and this was her first winter in the North. I was sure when the description of young female slid off the road that it could be her as there was no answer on her phone. It had snowed earlier. She was usually earlier arriving home. She was late that night, although she of course called me after with my frantic calls on her machine.

I have an article that quotes Williams as saying the accident occurred "just before 7"
mcsmom. I would suspect the Boston Globe was extremely cautious in their quotes. Funny thing I would say it happened a few minutes before 7 and others who heard would say 7 or a couple minutes after.---------After all these years, I still know of many that discuss it and have opinions, varying from wanting to disappear to 'grabbed' by someone, to safe house, to 'white slave', etc...I do not believe I have not heard suicide in several years. Trying to be objective here, the majority think she died at the scene or shortly after. It remains sad to not know.

Now now Snowy. We both know that the proper way to gather evidence is to take a poll on the internet. If 4 out of 5 people believe it's true, then that should be good enough for any judge.:-)
(Just a little humor to lighten the mood around here.)

Seriously though, I do hope Mr. C is onto something and has figured something out that could help move things forward. 8 years is too long for a family to wait for answers on the most basic questions. I can't imagine what they're going through and am hoping for the best for them.

Anne, you have probably gone over this a bunch of times. So I apologize in advance. When you heard this scanner call, was it an accident that happened in another area? Or an accident that happened in the place Maura was last seen by the bus driver? I'm just curious. I don't know if people are thinking there was a first accident that happened elsewhere, or if this new time-line would mean she crashed 20 minutes earlier in that same spot.

Anne I'm not trying to be difficult and I know you and I have disagreed on this before but I truly don't understand how you remembered word for word and right to the minute what was said on the scanner, even being worried about your friend. It wasn't until you joined in on the MM forum that you remembered hearing this call several months before.

Can you explain why after all this time there is still no proof that there was another accident in that area a little earlier. If it came over the scanner then someone called it in and it would have been on the dispatch log. There is no such information anywhere that I have seen. Columbos been working on it for years and yet there's still nothing to make us believe another accident took place earlier.
Why are some bringing up these old newspaper articles showing a time of "about 7"? Do we actually believe that they would spend time hunting down the exact timing of something before printing it?
And Anne as I've said before I didn't hear a second accident on my scanner. Are we on the same frequency?

Wait, I thought the roads were dry that night, no snow? I believe it's in the report that the road was dry so why worry so about your friend driving home?
***Anne wrote" I inadvertantly stated the 7pm search for maura via my scanner ***

Anne now I'm confused. Are you saying there was a 7pm search for Maura? How can that be if the alleged first accident didn't happen till 7:03?

Maybe it would be helpful to tell others what you heard on your scanner regarding this call. I know its been along time but do you remember the time you heard this call on your scanner? Thank you.

Sprint is one of the worst carriers to have from Concord North even today. There is no coverage including roaming in swiftwater area even today with sprint. I know this from past experience but have also attached a coverage map :http://coverage.sprint.com/IM PACT.jsp

Yes...Kind of strange why He would say this IF He knew it was a female driving the car.

Smith also stated that "He didn't know the roads that well", that is why the confusion of where He was and Why He took Cemetery rd. instead of continuing on Goose lane. This adds on a few minutes to the response time of actually arriving at the scene.

How long was Smith a cop for Haverhill in 2004.?

Yes this is true. But when you make a posting and put your own thoughts and opinions in the middle of it it no longer makes the whole posting a fact. Because you are mixing facts in with your own opinions. Hopefully you will understand what Iam saying.
