Hey guys I just got a little reprieve in my schedule. I wanted to give you some inferences that we (my group) have drawn up. That may be helpful because I see you guys are debating some of these issues. Take what you wish from these.
Maura crashed her car. Where it crashed or how doesn’t really matter because a witness saw her after the crash so it wasn’t a planned crash by her or anyone else.
Maura was drinking and wanted to distance herself from the car crash. Had she not been drinking she wouldn’t have needed to distance herself from the crash. She could have went to the neighbors house instead of attempting to run or get into a passing car.
Once SBD stopped and asked her for help and she declined (for whatever reason) she realized once she watched him pull into the driveway of his house that was so close to the crash site that she had to move to distance herself from the crash because he may call police.
Maura then stuffed the rag in the tail pipe. This is where it gets hazy did she put the rag there and was she trying to breath in the fumes to end her life? Maybe when SBD pulled up she realized she ran out of time and she had to commit suicide another way. Or maybe she planned on coming back to the crash, but for what reason. The car was wrecked. Where would she go on a beat up car that just had another crash?
Either way when SBD pulls away and she sees him drive and turn in 100ft to go into his driveway she has no choice but to run for fear of police. When she decides to leave on foot she thinks any and every headlight could be the police so she hides from incoming cars so nobody would see her, and if they can’t see her then nobody can abduct her. Her fear and adrenaline give her great distance in the woods and she then perishes.

I think a girl is way to guarded to do this. The only time I have seen luring work successfully was in 1984. Reses piesces were used and ET couldn't resist the sugary and peanut butter taste.

I think someone offered her a lift under the guise of helping her with the car. "Hop in, I'm just around the corner... my parents (mom, sister, granny) own a tow truck operation. We'll have you back here in a jiffy." That sort of covert presentation... most perps. are adept at making up convincing tall tales to lure prey.

May I ask, did you receive a grade on your project, or were you rewarded with Reese's Pieces?

Nice to see you back. The main problem that I've thought of regarding this theory is that if she was avoiding oncoming cars for fear of the police, or even to not get hit by an oncoming car, she likely would have had to step off into the snow. Probably leaving footprints. How often does a car pass by this road? Even if it's only 5 or 10 per hour, that's still 5 or 10 times she would have had to duck into the woods or down a side street or into the snow. A local driving by would likely notice this suspicious behavior and possibly report it, as the CW was said to do. I don't know if his sighting was credible, but that's another story.

Update: Hays County authorities are still searching for a man officials say sexually assaulted a 17-year-old before trying to kill her last week.

The man lured the girl into his car, described as a white SUV, at an Austin Capital Metro bus stop the morning of March 15 and drove her to an isolated area in Dripping Springs where he sexually assaulted her, Sgt. Jeri Skrocki said.

Skrocki said investigators believe the man realized the girl might be able to identify him and so stabbed her repeatedly, leaving her for dead. Stripped of her clothing, the girl stumbled toward the sound of traffic and tried to flag down help.

A passing driving saw her and called the sheriff’s office, Skrocki said.

“This woman had been brutalized,” Skrocki said.
